Sunday Meanderings....

FOOD FOR THOUGHT - A DEVOTIONAL

A New Sense of Joy

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me,
because I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

~~ Matthew 11:29-30 ~~

Even the most inspired Christian women can, from time to time, find themselves running on empty. The demands of daily life can drain us of our strength and rob us of the joy that is rightfully ours in Christ. Are you tired or troubled? Turn your heart toward God in prayer. Are you weak or worried? Take the time -- or, more accurately, make the time -- to delve deeply into God's Holy Word. Are you spiritually depleted? Call upon fellow believers to support you, and call upon Christ to renew your spirit and your life. When you do, you'll discover that the Creator of the universe stands always ready and always able to create a new sense of wonderment and joy in you.

But while relaxation is one thing, refreshment is another.
We need to drink frequently and at length
from God's fresh springs, to spend time in the Scripture,
time in fellowship with Him, time worshiping Him.

~~ Ruth Bell Graham ~~

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

The vitamins are working! Hooray! I don't feel nearly as tired today as I normally do after a full week of sewing, cooking and taking care of grandchildren. Two weeks ago I bought a big bottle of Centrum Silver, just to get started taking a good multi-vitamin. I plan to do a little research into the whole vitamin thing, but for now, I just needed to start the habit and seriously, after only two weeks, I feel better. I'd say I feel 56 instead of 58! :-)

What's this?

If you're a day over 50, I'll bet you know what this is. I learned how to do this back in my (drug-free) hippie days. My tomato plants doubled in size this week and I got so excited, I decided to continue growing food by starting this. That's a clue. "Food." But I have to tell you, if this produces food here in western Colorado, it'll break some kind of a record, I'm sure. LOL

BIG FAT DRESSES, GONE WILD

So you'll remember I made this green big fat dress a few weeks ago. I really like it. I like it so much I actually wore it out in public. Once. I like it so much....

....I made another one.

And when I backed off and took an honest look at this one, I realized, this pattern is supposed to be a cute dress. But it's too short and it's too fluffy.

Clearly, I needed to make some changes.

So I lost the sleeves and added six inches to the length. I should have known better than to make a knee length dress. I haven't worn knee length dresses since I worked in an office and still had cute knees. :-)

This dress I like. It's comfortable and although it's not as fluffy as the other two, it still has those great big pockets (my favorite thing). And...

...because I didn't make the big fat sleeves, I had enough fabric left over to make Avery a little dress. Sweet, huh.

As promised, here we are in our matching summery yellow dresses:

Avery wouldn't cooperate.
She didn't want me holding her.

Note: It is absolutely shocking to me how much I look like my mom in this picture.

Artsy fartsy with the flower planter stuck right in the middle of the lawn didn't work out too slick either.

I finally decided to show you this one because if nothing else, you can see that I did my roots yesterday morning. :-)

And here's the matching bloomers.

Now that I got the big fat dress thing and the matching dress thing out of my system, I think I'll start a felt Advent calendar kit. LOL

LAST OF THE LAID BACK DAYS OF LATE SPRING

It's going to get hot here any day now. This is western Colorado. We live eight miles from the Utah border which is about as west as you can go in Colorado and this is desert country. We're having some unusually mild, overcast but warm and breezy days and we're making the most of them. When it finally gets hot here, it's relentless, until late September and we'd just about kill for a little breeze.

So yesterday Cameron and Avery came down to play (Krissy had to work a special event and Andy's gone fishing in the aforementioned Utah). We threw open the doors and windows and it was the perfect day to....

....listen to some Beach Boys!

What? You don't have the Beach Boys' Greatest Hits? Really, you should do something about that. Amazon.com? eBay?

Right up until yesterday, Avery's favorite song was Free Credit Report Dot Com and I'm not kidding. She starts dancing the minute one of those commercials comes on TV.

I'm pretty sure her new favorite song is either Surfin' Safari or Little Deuce Coupe. You should have seen her - it occurs to me that yesterday was the first time I've ever put the sound system on when she was here. She LOVES to dance and how can anyone not dance to The Beach Boys?

If you can sit still while listening to Kokomo by The Beach Boys, there's just something wrong with you.

Even Cameron danced and let me tell you....

....I was shocked.
Because he's about as laid back as they come.

(Is it just me, or does Chelsea's face look
too small for her body in this picture?)

SOME LAST THOUGHTS

I'm going to bake up a storm today. My niece Sarah and my sister Bev both mentioned this week that they like to spend a whole day stocking the freezer with baked goods. I'm not sure why I've never done that. So today I'm making lots of pumpkin bread and Amy Grant's grandma's banana nut bread and freezing them. Then I'm looking through my cupboards to see what else I can bake and freeze because I'm just in one of those moods, you know? Once it gets hot here, I lose my desire to bake much.

For the first time in ages, I don't have any one particular project lined up. I'm honestly not sure what I'll do with the upcoming week, although I'm sure I'll stay busy because I can't stand to not be busy. I'm not sewing frantically for my shoppe since I downsized it all. It was getting completely out of hand, taking over my life, and making me sad. I'm perfectly content to keep burp cloths in stock and stop to make a sock monkey from time to time.

I started my little shop to help me and Rob pay our bills. Quitting smoking did more to help us pay our bills than Santa stars and sock monkeys and burp cloths combined.

Yesterday was our four month anniversary. The last time I woke up with a morning cough was when I had a head cold, back in March. Life is about 100% better in every way imaginable, when you don't smoke cigarettes. Quitting is the smartest thing I ever, ever did.

A LITTLE WISDOM FROM ERMA

Who, in their infinite wisdom, decreed
that Little League uniforms be white?
Certainly not a mother.

On vacations, we hit the sunny beaches
where we occupy ourselves
keeping the sun off our skin,
the saltwater off our bodies
and the sand out of our belongings.

Have you any idea how many children it takes
to turn off the light in the kitchen? Three.
It takes one to say, "What light?" and two more to say,
"I didn't turn it on."

Just some offbeat Erma. I love Erma. And I hope you have a really nice new week.

Absolutely adorable dresses! I think you hit the jackpot on "cute" with the sleeveless number. LOVE it! Makes me wish I could sew :-)

Now I'm going to have to go to youtube and listen to some Beach Boys! LOL

My son quit smoking 2 months ago. I'm so proud of him! Now the only smoking going on at his house is the big old smoker he built for ribs and chicken :-) Congratulations on 4 months smoke free!!!

It's opposite seasons here so I'm shifting into baking mode with the cooler weather. Just loving my new book, Artesan Bread in 5 minutes a day. Today for lunch we had homemade Mexican-style chicken soup and Vermont cheddar bread -- only my cheese is Lincoln from Buenos Aires, not cheddar from Vermont :-)

I'm still trying to learn something about me. How can I be so dang tough, rarely one to cry, and yet I can be moved to tears over things that others wouldn't likely cry over at all. Evidence of God revealed in nature (sunsets, waves breaking along the shoreline, etc.) makes me tear up. A fall leaf blowing around in a puddle made me tear up. And now you saying how good you feel now that you stopped smoking. Made me tear up. I'm so glad you stopped, Barb. For you. For your health. For those who love you most.
Oh, and the artsy fartsy photo with the planter in it? Check out your fingers over Avery's head. I do believe you gave that little girl a rooster comb prop. :D
BLessings,
~Toni~
p.s. made the breakfast casserole recipe you shared after Mandy's wedding. Mmmm! My family loves it. I use bacon instead of sausage (there are only 2 sausage fans in our family of 6) and it's gone like that.

Toni said...

I meant that i made the casserole AGAIN this past week (I've made it at least a handful of times already.)
And I have no idea what you're growing. Do tell.

Just love that picture at the top with you and Avery in the sundresses. So cute!! The little touches on Avery's dress -- the lace and buttons -- almost have me itching to sew again. I don't have any little girls to sew for, though. :-) But I am having so much trouble finding things I like in stores these days, I've been tempted to sew.

Sounds like you've hit the right balance with your shop.

One of my sisters has financial troubles and I keep thinking it would help so much -- her health even more than her finances -- if she would quit. I know smokers don't want to hear that, though.

Our temps here in SC have reached 90s already, and with the humidity it's plum hot. I'm not inspired to keep the oven on for an hour or so for banana bread, but I've been thinking about trying banana muffins with mini chocolate chips in them. I've never put the chips in banana bread or muffins, but I've thought about it.

Have a good week, barb!

It's an avocado pit!

MC said...

AVOCADO!

I know this, and I am only 33. However, my mom and aunt used to attempt this every once in a while. My aunt's once reached a rather skinny four feet tall...on her deck on Long Island. But it bore no fruit.

Donnetta said...

I absolutely love the pic's of you both in the yellow dresses! Lovely!!

I'm going with avocado pit as well. But I don't remember how to do that. You are going to share the details right? :-)

"Dove" said...

Avocado pit! I'm weighing in with my (39 year old) vote. :) My Mom used to do that when I was growing up, and although I remember the strange pits dangling over glasses of water and sprouting roots, I don't recall any actual plants growing anywhere in our house or yard. I'll have to ask her about that.......

I have "fresh" bananas sitting on my counter and I'm waiting for them to turn brown so I can make that bread. They aren't turning nearly fast enough for me. :) I REALLY want to taste that bread. Why is it that when I buy them to eat they turn brown instantly?? I throw away more brown bananas. No one in my family will eat them once the green is gone. BUT, when I have good ones sitting on my counter just waiting for them to go bad, I of course have to beat them away with a stick. All the sudden, everyone is in the mood to eat a banana!

Aren't you two adorable in your sunshine yellow dresses. Very nice.

It's has been cold here, frost warnings for two nights now. I dragged my poor little tomato plants into the garage last night and will be doing it again tonight. It's been weird weather.

The two of you are just too cute wearing those pretty dresses.

I made my banana bread today. It is yummy. Thanks for the recipe.

Have a great week, Barb.

Kelli said...

I love the picture of the two of you! It made my day :)

And, I'm hoping is funds loosen up to have a day of stocking up my freezer, too. That used to be one of my favorite things to do. Hoping, hoping, hoping!

A hint... John taught me that the fastest way to turn bananas brown is to put them in the fridge, on the bottom shelf. Works like a charm!

Miss emailing you- hopefully I stay on m feet and out of the ER (LOL) so I have more time to keep up with you :)

Know that i ma in.cred.ib.ly proud of you and Rob on your anniversary. There are NO words.

Love you bunchitos!

Fun post. I love your Sunday posts. Did I ever tell you that I look for them each week?

Your dresses are adorable. And I love the free, summery look of your yellow dress with no sleeves. So cute and comfy. You'll wear it to death I think.

Have a great, great week!!

I have to tell you I loooove your blog. I turn to it the 1st thing every day. I miss it when you don't post. I love Avery's dress & I like your big fat dress better without sleeves. But it doesn't look like a big fat dress on you. I love the Sunday posts best.

I'm sitting here right now in a sleeveless cotton house dress, my usual attire when I'm home. It's all I wear at home, honestly. I love your dresses and Avery's too!

Yep, avocado pit. I've raised several up to about 4 feet tall, but then they croaked because I didn't have room to bring them inside over the Winter. They're a tropical tree so they're definitely not Winter hardy outside even here in Arkansas, much less in Colorado.

I LOVE the Beach Boys, and I love to dance, though I'm not able to dance much these days with my bum knees. Emmy definitely loves music and is already a dancer too. :o)

I am so happy for you that quitting smoking has freed up enough money that you don't have to slave over your sewing to sell in your shoppe. I knew you were burned out with it, and it was wearing you down, and the benefits to your health of not smoking far outweighs the material benefits from it.

Love you, dear friend.

Those dresses remind me of what I sewed in the 70s. Look so comfy!

I love banana bread and have a really good recipe. When my bananas go bad and I don't have time or energy to bake (most of the time!), I mash them up and freeze them. Works great.

I keep saying it - I wish I still sewed - but I'd never be able to keep up with 4 girlies!

I thought so often when you were quitting smoking that you would be able to destress your life and have money to spend! So great.

Kristen's doing much better today, and all 4 are sleeping at home for the first time in 10 nights. I can go to the gym tomorrow morning!

I loved every single bit of this, the photos of you two are precious and I saved several to have copies of. The mental image of you guys dancing to Beach Boys is pretty precious too - way more fun than any aerobics video out there. And yes, quitting smoking IS the smartest thing you ever, ever, ever did and I'm still so grateful and proud of you guys. xoxo

It sounds like life is good for you, Barb. Cute, cute dresses. Doing some baking. A bit of Erma. I just love your Sunday posts. They've become as much of my routine as the Sunday Morning show.

Hi Barb...You know I really feel like I should tell you this...so I will.

Mom and I and most of our family love Paula Deen. I always said that if I were to show up on her doorstep tomorrow, that I truly feel like she would hug me, invite me in and cook something...anything.

Well your blog is kinda like that for me. I absolutely love to come and catch up with you. I could read forever if I had time. And I truly feel welcome here. Even though we have never met and we are miles apart, I feel like I am welcome and even if we did meet that it would be the same way...and let me tell you....

Emmy would give Miss Avery a run for her money dancing... and Emmy's favorite is "Shake Your Booty" by KC and the Sunshine Band...you should try Avery on that.

I'm loving your blog, and I'm loving yoru grandkids...and especially when you match them in gorgeous clothes that you make!

Love you and Have a Great Week!!!

Jess

Oh your matching dresses are adorable!!! I love them! Great job.

I'm working on a dress for Boo right now. I got some "sheered" fabric at Jo Ann's (on sale, of course)...you know the kind with the stretchy bodice and straight skirt? Anyway, I bought it, I've sewn the back seam and I"m working on making a ruffled hem and some bow tie shoulder straps, and a matching bow. I'll post a picture when I'm done.

If it goes well, maybe I'll buy myself some material and make a matching one. :)

I have to agree with Avery- I enjoy the Free Credit Report.Com songs too...they crack me up and are pretty catchy too!

Avocado, baby! My mom used to start these all the time. I don't think any of them really "took", though. I try to start them, as well. All in vain. I'll be happy for you if it works. Expect bloggy updates, too. ;)

Darling and adorable yellow summer dresses. I lurve the picture you had on your title header today. Won't you and Avery and Cameron have just the best relationship when they're older and tempted to get into trouble? They'll not only have their parents to guide them, but a grandma and grandpa who love them to pieces. My grandma was so instrumental in my teen years.

CONGRATS ON 4 MONTHS!!!! I'm so thrilled for you both.

Can't wait to make Amy Grant's grandma's banana bread, but I will probably still like my grandma's recipe better, just cuz! ya know??!

SO much to love here!

First, I foresee these photos of you with Avery becoming lifelong treasures. The sweetness is beyond description.

Next, babies that boogie are a serious weakness. I've been known to pause, rewind and play whatever would make the baby du jour bounce their diaper-clad booty until the poor child begged for mercy.

Also, the baking? I'm on it. Fresh blueberries are waiting for me on the kitchen counter as I type. Not sure what all they'll be yet...

Lastly, Beach Boys! Love, love, LOVE 'em, and the kids do too. Aruba, Jamaica...

Have a wonderful week, Barb! Can't wait to see what it brings for you!

Dana~Are We There Yet? said...

Oops! Almost forgot...AVOCADO PIT! You make me want to grow one, but I don't have a kitchen window! Also, can you really get avocados from those, because, while my Gran always had at least one of them in her kitchen window, I can't recall ever seeing an avocado come from one.
