FOOD FOR THOUGHT - A DEVOTIONAL

Where to Take Your Troubles

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything
by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving,
let your requests be made known to God.

~~ Philippians 4:6 ~~

Sometimes, the world seems to shift beneath our feet. From time to time, all of us face adversity, discouragement, or disappointment. And, throughout life, we must all endure life-changing personal losses that leave us anxiously struggling for breath. When we do, God stands ready to protect us.

The Bible instructs us to, "Be strong and courageous and do the work. Don't be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He won't leave you or forsake you" (1 Chronicles 28:20). When we are troubled, we must call upon God, and in time He will heal us.

Are you anxious? Take those anxieties to God. Are you troubled? Take your troubles to Him. Does your future seem uncertain? Place your trust in the One who is forever faithful.

SPRING CLEANING? WHAT SPRING CLEANING? I'M DONE!

After working my way through my house for the past five weeks, which is when I quit smoking, it's done. My house is clean. It's smoke free. And it's decluttered. I've washed every surface I can reach. Every article of clothing we own has been washed. Every last single one. I've gone through every cupboard, closet and drawer and the pile going to Goodwill is amazing, but I was ruthless and it feels wonderful. And this past week, I finished washing walls and steam cleaning carpet. This house is officially ready for spring.

My living room is clean from this angle....

....and this angle....

....and even this angle.

Laura would be proud of me - I've always used baskets to organize things that have to sit out in the open. Actually, my closets are full of baskets, too. :-)

The last place I decluttered was these book shelves. They're located right in the center of the house and they constantly catch clutter, but the biggest problem was my inability to let go of a book. Take a look. I let them go, almost all of them! I only kept my very favorite collections and all the rest are going to the library or the used book store.

We found out that our local library really appreciates donations of hard bound books and our favorite used book store (Twice Upon a Time) is only accepting paperbacks right now. How perfect is that? So right now the garage looks like our own personal used book store, but tomorrow Rob and I are sorting them out and taking them to their new homes.

I considered doing a big book giveaway, but here's the truth. The postage would kill me, even if I sent all the books media rate. I simply cannot do it, but it does feel good to know that we're going to be making a seriously nice donation to our local library. Our books will reach a lot of people that way.

These shelves are so much nicer now. Cameron and Avery now have their own shelf. The top shelf on the left is Rob's and I cleared a second shelf for him, not that he needs it, but he had to promise me he wouldn't fill it up with ball caps. LOL And I have a couple of shelves strictly for my cookbooks and craft books and most important of all, my Martha Stewart "how to do just about anything" book. :-)

OH, YES I DID!

Laugh if you want to, but I'm now the proud owner of my own "personal sound amplifier." Heck! I'M laughing, but you know what? It works! I can hear the TV now without announcing to the whole neighborhood that I'm a reality TV addict. I was so happy when I found this, I almost shouted, "Bingo!" right there in Bed, Bath and Beyond. LOL

It's very subtle, don't you think? :-)

WRAPPING UP THE WEEK

This was my other great find yesterday. I've needed a good cast iron skillet forever, so I can make cornbread like Diane's - you know, the way you're supposed to make it. I was tickled pink to find a square one.

Cameron worked so hard Friday, helping me wash walls and clean carpet, his mommy and I treated him to a trip to the pet store Friday evening, and we let him pick out quite a few fish to keep in Nana's aquarium.

Here's his new swordtails. It's a boy and a girl, and they're live bearers, so we'll be having some fish babies soon. He'll love that.

Note to self: buy a floating baby tank - otherwise the new babies are going to be dinner for my humongous angel fish and I really don't want to have to explain that to Cameron.

You have to click on this photo to see the other little fish he picked out. I thought they were a little boring, but he loved them so we have eight more brownish-yellowish tetras in the tank now. And two pink catfish but they're busy behind the scenes (code - eating junk off the bottom of the tank) so you can't see them.

ONE LAST THOUGHT

I love this picture. I love it because the moment I saw it, I realized that Cameron is still young enough that he is honestly this enthralled with my carpet shampooer. He is so in awe of it, he laid down on the floor as close as he was brave enough to get to it, and just watched it in action.

Can you imagine? Someday, like all of us, he's going to feel like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. But Friday afternoon, he was this carefree.

I want to be that carefree. Don't you?

Happy new week, everyone. Spring arrives on Friday and I don't know about you, but I'm as happy as I can be about that.

I saw that amplifier advertised and wondered if it really worked. Now I know! P.S. If you would like to take a vacation to Missouri my house is just begging for a spring cleaning!

I'm with you, Barb. I have a very hard time getting rid of books. But when Dave got me my bookshelves I made a promise to myself that I would only keep the ones I really, really liked and would probably read again. So far so good. But then they are only 3 months old. LOL.

I saw those things advertised. And they really work? I'll have to check into them for my mom.

Well, you're home looks just beautiful. It must feel so good. And I think you must have posted that devotional just for lil ole me! ;v)

Oh, and I love your cast iron fry pan. I can't believe you actually found a square one. That is really neat!

I've loved watching you clean. Much better than doing it myself lol. No really, you've inspired me to get to decluttering. Looks so nice. Here's another idea for some of your books... paperbackswap.com is a great place to trade books. You can put restrictions on books too. Like i don't accept any from smoking homes etc. You can trade all kinds on there. I get most of my son's on there and quite a few for myself too. I donate some books and trade some on there. Great job this month!

The Grand Junction Library is gonna LOVE you!! And just think you did most of this cleaning while you were taking care of grandbabies....how do you do it??? I can't seem to clean one single thing, and my little guy can occupy himself a good bit of the time. I need some serious cleaning help...my house is a disaster and it's driving my dh crazy!

Barb you have been one lean mean cleaning machine. Way to go and yes I am definitely proud of you. Look at how far you've come in conquering such a powerful addiction and ridding your home of all traces of it. Now you can sit back and enjoy all your hard work.

Yay!!

Ah yes - I do want to be that carefree Barb. There are actually some moments when I am, but they are far too rare. I think it is one of those special, childhood joys.
Your house fairly sparkles. Isn't it a good feeling to have it all done? It is symbolic, I think, of what you and Rob have done for yourselves. Good job Barb!
Now relax and have a blessed sunday - and listen to Amazing Race tonight without sharing it with the neighbors!

I have to tell you that the commercial for the sound amplifier makes me laugh so hard that I make Pace rewind it on the Tivo! I LOVE it when the girl walking to the mailbox spies on the neighbors' conversation--it's my favorite commercial. And now I know a real, live person with one! Awesome :)

Hooray for spring cleaning! Your quest inspired me over the last weeks to tackle a few projects here and there, and my house is much happier for it!!

Just think, if you hadn't quit smoking your house would not have been that clean. So quitting caused more than 1 good thing.
I'm going right out & get 2 sound amplifiers. My husband & I watch a TV program & he will say "did you hear what they said?" And I will say "no didn't you hear it?" Well no more. I am glad to know it works.

Well, congratulations on finishing a job well done. You deserve a BIG treat. I am so proud of you for getting that house cleaner than it has ever been. Really. And now you know for certain it will never be clogged with smoke. Ever. Good! For! You!

And a prediction. Cameron is going to grow up and own his own string of heavy duty cleaning companies. He has been trained by the best, and it enthralled with the proper machinery. I'm taking bets.

Have a wonderful week. I guess this means it is time for a new project. Your shoppe. Another challenge to keep you busy.

I'm so thrilled you are done with your cleaning! I wish I had the inspiration to do such a job! I have to be inspired you know...
I've thought about getting one of those amplifiers..so they really do work?

I LOVE the first day of spring! Even if it snows on that day, it sings hope to me. And I say wear the hearing thing if it works - it's worth it. I seriously think being hard of hearing runs in our family at a relatively early age. So good for you - you actually just look like you have a bluetooth thing on - nobody would think otherwise really. I like the new arrangement of your rooms too - it looks fabulous and you should be awfully proud of all the hard work you've done in this past five weeks. xoox

Barb,

Does that sound amplifier really work? Can you give us a full report after you've tested it out for a while? (I'm thinking of my mom.)

Congratulations on finishing your spring cleaning! That always feels so good! :-)

Okay now that you are done your place how about hopping on a plane and helping me spring clean mine. LOL.

God bless.

Your house looks great, Barb. Good for you! Now you can use all that extra time on your hands to work on your new shoppe site, and for the stock you're going to need when you open it.

I love your new cast iron skillet! I haven't tried any of the Logic preseasoned stuff so I can't comment on it. I'm curious how it will do when you use it the first couple of times, whether your cornbread will stick or not.

I'm gradually making progress here at my place with my cleaning spree. I still have a few big projects to tackle and several minor cleaning jobs to do, but I'm getting there. It feels so good to look around and see how much I've accomplished!

Hope you have a great new week, sweet friend.

xoxoxo

Woo Hoo! Five weeks! My goodness. How are you feeling? Lot of cravings? Or are you too busy to have them?

Your house looks divine.

Adorable pic of Cameron and the steam cleaner. Ugh, though, you're reminding me that I have carpets to clean. I know it'll feel better and less sneezy around here when I do it.

I'm with Bev--your amplifier looks like a blue tooth. Everyone has something poking out of their ears nowadays...glad you found something that works for you.

Being blessed is so great isn't it!

Have a great week

I don't know... Parting with books to me is like pulling out teeth without anesthesia... Besides snowpeople, that's about all I collect really and they'd be must easier to part with than the books...

But, I do need to de-clutter and my carpet won't get shampooed for just a little while yet... I have to make sure Bella is totally trained. She is doing great but little dogs... Well, you know. They are demanding as puppies so, since spring doesn't arrive her until May-June, I'm waiting a bit. Love the pic of Cameron...to cute!

Ah, yes, I want to be as carefree as Cameron!

Tomorrow begins the contested termination trial and I'm nervous and scared. Your prayer would be much appreciated!

Wow, your house literally sparkles. I desperately need to start SOMEWHERE and clean something. My excuse, but really my reason, is that it's so hard with the little twins, and I'm so tired. Is that a good excuse??

Toni said...

Beautiful insight. And yes, I want to be THAT carefree. Btw, spring arrived on March 1st in my world. Oh sure, the calendar said otherwise. But my psychological need to be done with winter said March 1st. And so I give myself permission to let it be so. I said to myself, "Self, it is as you say." :D
Blessings,

It's official. Sunglasses in your house is a must:)

And blue and red tetra are my ultra favorite aquarium fish, but I've never gotten them. And I was surprised to find out other fish besides the guppies can have babies in a personal tank - so cool to know this!

So have you been able to pick up any conversations from the neighbors yet? I love that commercial too, makes me laugh every time.

I now agonizingly watch TV on mute while I rock my almost 14 month old to sleep at nights. I would love to splurge on wireless headphones that let you hear the TV while keeping the home silent after I put him to bed.

Ahhhhh, your home looks so inviting. Maybe you could run a bed and breakfast for short vacations at your home...hmmmm. You can call it Bed & Breakfast at A Chelsea Morning. Just a thought meant mostly as a compliment.
