Crocheted dishcloth

Lily Sugar 'n Cream in Buttercream

MATERIALS

100% cotton worsted weight yarn - approximately two ounces
Crochet hook, size H (5.00 mm)

I used Sugar 'n Cream by Lily. The balls I used were the new super size (3 ounces). The regular balls are 2 to 2.5 ounces. I was able to make three dishcloths from two of the super size balls, so I think you can plan on one cloth per ball, if you buy the regular size ball of yarn.

Hotflash! I mean, Newsflash! I just got my JoAnn's sales flyer in the mail and from Sunday, March 29th through Saturday, April 11th, the yarn I used, Lily Sugar 'n Cream, is on sale - 5 super size balls for $10. It takes two balls to make three of these dishcloths - so you can make three of them for $4. That's a good deal!

THE PATTERN

BODY

Chain 31.

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 30 sc.

To work beginning Cluster, YO, insert hook in next sc, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook, YO, skip next sc, insert hook in next sc, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

To work Cluster, YO, insert hook in same st as last leg of last Cluster made, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook, YO, skip next sc, insert hook in next sc, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

Row 2: (Right side): Ch 3 (counts as first hdc plus ch 1), turn; work beginning Cluster, ch 1, (work Cluster, ch 1) across to last sc, hdc in last sc: 14 Clusters.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in each st across: 30 sc.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3, 11 times; then repeat Row 2 once more; do not finish off.

EDGING

Rnd 1: Ch 1, do not turn; work 34 sc evenly spaced aross end of rows; working in free loops of beginning ch, 2 sc in each of first 2 chs, sc in each ch across to last 2 chs, 2 sc in each of last 2 chs; work 34 sc evenly spaced across end of rows, working across last row, 2 sc in each of first 2 sts, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, 2 sc in each of last 2 sts; join with slip st to first sc: 136 sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc) in same st, skip next 2 sc, *(sc, hdc, dc) in next sc, skip next 2 sc; repeat from * around; join with slip st to first sc, finish off.

When I completed row 2, mine measured exactly nine inches. Yours may vary, depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet, but it's a dishcloth - I don't think it matters much as long as you continue making the rows until it's square. And I'm not sure it even matters if it's square. :-)

If you choose not to put any edging on it, it will look like this. Mine is nine inches square which is kind of small for a dishcloth, I think.

If you choose to only do round 1 of the edging, it will look like this. This is simply a row of single crochet stitches all around the cloth. I'd probably do at least this row, to give it a little more stability.

If you choose to complete round two of the edging, it will look like this. I like the shell border all around. Mine came out about ten inches square. The size seems right to me, for either dishcloths or washcloths for the bath.

Lily Sugar 'n Cream in Pastel Print

What a sweet gift a little stack of dishcloths makes, especially if you include some special soap with them.

Hugs to Becky at The Butler's Wife. She's knitted these forever and thanks to her, my sister Bev at GRITS fell in love with the idea of making and giving knitted cotton dishcloths as shower and just-because gifts. My sister knew I'd love something like this to work on at night when I watch TV, so she sent me a couple of balls of Sugar 'n Cream and the rest, as they say, is....

I'm more comfortable with crochet. So I took a Leisure Arts pattern I loved and adapted it to work with the worsted weight yarn. I hope you enjoy it. :-)

They are adorable. I only wish I could crochet. Love the pastel colors. BTW, congrats to you and your kicking the habit!

Love the way they turned out - I use the one I made in the shower, and am absolutely in love with it, enought that I'm going to make a bunch more to have on hand in the bathrooms. Much nicer than those netty things and you can throw them in the washer and drier.

I think there is nothing better than a handmade gift. And I don't know who enjoys it more - the giver or the receiver!

I'm gonna get me some of that Peaches 'N Cream cotton yarn and make me some dish cloths! I'll have to buy my yarn at Hobby Lobby though. My Walmart doesn't carry yarn or fabric anymore, and we don't have a Joanne's anywhere around here. I'd never even heard of it until I started blogging and people talked about it. No Michael's either. :-(

The 2.5 oz. balls of Peaches 'N Cream are $1.79 at Hobby Lobby, and the 1 lb. cones are $10.97. I'll have to check the Hobby Lobby web site to see if I can print off some coupons before I go buy my yarn.

I'm printing off that pattern and saving this post to my bookmarks so I can go back to it anytime!

Happy Thursday!

xoxoxo

I make the knitted dishcloths.

You can buy a large "cone" of this yarn at Hobby Lobby for around $7 and I can get 7 dishcloths out of a cone.

Love it Barb, I've been knitting and crocheting Dishcloths for about 6 months now and I love them. I even make washcloths too, the kids love them because they're so soft on their skin.

And yes, they make great gifts, I gave some out for Christmas and the family loved them. :)

Hi, I came over from Grandma Dawns. Love the dish cloth. Now I want to say congrats on quitting smoking. My 23 year old son has recently tried to stop. None of the rest of the family smokes...or his friends...he hid it from us and still leaves the house (he recently graduated from college and moved home) to drive away and smoke. I always know because my mother was a smoker (which as a little boy he lectured her about) and I defiantly recognize it. He says he is trying to stop and has tried the gum and the patch makes him crazy. What helped you. I am so worried about him. If you have any tips you can email me. Thanks

I've been sewing dishcloths lately too! I use a different pattern though. I recently organized some of my craft stuff and realized that I have enough yarn to open my own yarn store - no joke. I'm committed now to using it up! Get ready everyone - you're all getting dish cloths for your birthday this year ;)

I like the idea of giving them with soaps - I usually do a wooden spoon or nice spatula - the soap would be a fun change...maybe it would lessen the sting of getting yet another dish cloth from me ;)

So very pretty, I love this pattern! As soon as I am done with Joey's afghan I think I make a few... Nice idea for a gift with the soap. Hugs to you!

Barb, I love the colours of your dish cloths. I do knit some, but I really like the looks of the crochet ones.

God bless.

Barb,
Will you just come over to my house and teach me how to crochet in person? :-)

I've always wanted to learn, but I'm intimidated due to my lack of craftiness.

So think about that trip to my house, would you? LOL!!

Lovely dish cloths - everything you do is so professional looking.

Love the previous post - I'm making sure Kristen reads it - she's having anxiety attacks these days. Don't know if there's a connection or not.

Love that yarn. My MILove make these for me. I sewed two together and made a loop to hang it. A wonderful pot holder!

Hi Barb,
Thanks for stopping by my blog and saying hi to me and to Eleanor Elizabeth (the bunny).

I am a knitting addict. When I have nothing else to knit, I knit discloths! I'm glad you've found a crochet pattern for them that works so well.

I read your update on smoking. My dad tried to quit, many times I think, hid the fact he hadn't quit, finally after my mom died, gave up and just smoked. I KNOW it contributed to his death (saw the death cert). I still miss him.

Willow said...

OH, I hit the comment button before I could say Brava! Hurray for you for quitting. Cold turkey.

I got so excited when I say "Sugar and Cream in Buttercream", but you lost me at yarn...

I have a feeling that I would love to work with my hands like this, but I don't know how to start, turn or finish.

Maybe I'll just stick to reading. That I know how to do, even if I don't have a thing to show for it afterwards. :o)

My mom used to make these all the time...when ever we'd move or anyone would have a "getting married" shower shed supply several in the color of the new kitchen. :) she also makes house slippers after the same fashion...only to match our bathrobes and not the kitchen , of course. :)

Toni said...

I made several in that first color for my mom. I did use at least 3 different patterns, but that is so not necessary. One pattern and different yarns works just great. And they hold up waaaay better than store quality.
Blessings,
~Toni~

Thanks for sharing the pattern Barb. I knit dishcloths all the time for friends and like you, found a pattern I enjoy and mostly stick with it. So nice to have something to do with my hands while watching tv. But I've crocheted longer than I've knit and sometimes I just get in the mood for it, so these cloths will fit the bill. :)
