Crocheted dishcloth

Lily Sugar 'n Cream in Buttercream


MATERIALS

100% cotton worsted weight yarn - approximately two ounces
Crochet hook, size H (5.00 mm)

I used Sugar 'n Cream by Lily. The balls I used were the new super size (3 ounces). The regular balls are 2 to 2.5 ounces. I was able to make three dishcloths from two of the super size balls, so I think you can plan on one cloth per ball, if you buy the regular size ball of yarn.

THE PATTERN

BODY

Chain 31.

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across: 30 sc.

To work beginning Cluster, YO, insert hook in next sc, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook, YO, skip next sc, insert hook in next sc, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

To work Cluster, YO, insert hook in same st as last leg of last Cluster made, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook, YO, skip next sc, insert hook in next sc, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

Row 2: (Right side): Ch 3 (counts as first hdc plus ch 1), turn; work beginning Cluster, ch 1, (work Cluster, ch 1) across to last sc, hdc in last sc: 14 Clusters.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in each st across: 30 sc.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3, 11 times; then repeat Row 2 once more; do not finish off.

EDGING

Rnd 1: Ch 1, do not turn; work 34 sc evenly spaced aross end of rows; working in free loops of beginning ch, 2 sc in each of first 2 chs, sc in each ch across to last 2 chs, 2 sc in each of last 2 chs; work 34 sc evenly spaced across end of rows, working across last row, 2 sc in each of first 2 sts, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, 2 sc in each of last 2 sts; join with slip st to first sc: 136 sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc) in same st, skip next 2 sc, *(sc, hdc, dc) in next sc, skip next 2 sc; repeat from * around; join with slip st to first sc, finish off.


When I completed row 2, mine measured exactly nine inches. Yours may vary, depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet, but it's a dishcloth - I don't think it matters much as long as you continue making the rows until it's square. And I'm not sure it even matters if it's square. :-)


If you choose not to put any edging on it, it will look like this. Mine is nine inches square which is kind of small for a dishcloth, I think.


If you choose to only do round 1 of the edging, it will look like this. This is simply a row of single crochet stitches all around the cloth. I'd probably do at least this row, to give it a little more stability.


If you choose to complete round two of the edging, it will look like this. I like the shell border all around. Mine came out about ten inches square. The size seems right to me, for either dishcloths or washcloths for the bath.

What a sweet gift a little stack of dishcloths makes, especially if you include some special soap with them.

Hugs to Becky at The Butler's Wife. She's knitted these forever and thanks to her, my sister Bev at GRITS fell in love with the idea of making and giving knitted cotton dishcloths as shower and just-because gifts. My sister knew I'd love something like this to work on at night when I watch TV, so she sent me a couple of balls of Sugar 'n Cream and the rest, as they say, is....

I'm more comfortable with crochet. So I took a Leisure Arts pattern I loved and adapted it to work with the worsted weight yarn. I hope you enjoy it. :-)
