Some fun facts.....

...for me, anyway.

Since I went all professional and shop-owner, about two and a half months ago, this has happened...

My very first sale was to my sister Bev and it was a complete fake sale. I sent her a "practice" PayPal invoice, for a sock monkey, which I priced at $35 (now they're $28), just to see if I'd gotten the whole premiere-account-merchant-services-send-an-invoice thing down pat.

She totally PAID the invoice, and she told me she was proud of me and this was my first offical show of support. LOL Bev, I owe you a sock monkey AND a Thumbelina doll to replace the one I completely destroyed when you were seven. I also love you, a lot.

I've sold fifty sets of burp cloths. Fifty. That's 150 burp cloths. For pete's sake. And here's what is ridiculous - I have a three month old baby in this house five days a week and I own TWO burp cloths. I'm telling you, the shoemaker's kids are barefoot.

I truly thought the sock monkey was a great idea. So I went bananas, so to speak, and bought every package of Red Heel socks Grand Junction had to offer AND went to the web site and ordered more and got down to monkey business.

I seriously don't remember when I've been so overwhelmed. I swear, sock monkey socks are just messy when you start cutting them - little brown bits of stuff everywhere and I swear, making sixteen of them all at once is the reason Zoloft and Prozac are enjoying such great sales right now. My personal choice is a careful combination of Zoloft and Ambien. You know. So I can sleep a lot and not care. (I'm kidding - I'm not taking drugs :-)

I've sold all my monkeys and have backorders.

I made one hundred and eight Santa stars and sold them in sets of three. I announced those less than forty-eight hours ago and I have three sets left.

I'll be making some more Santa stars and I think it's just cute to make Christmas ornaments when it's ninety degrees outside, while sipping a frozen margarita, don't you? I think for Christmas, I'll make fun-fur enhanced flip flops and sip hot chocolate. That should work.

I've also sold six blanket-bib-burp cloth sets and guess what? I ran out of ladybug dot fabric, got two orders, and with the help of my sister, all the way in Pennsylvania (I'm in Colorado) have more fabric on the way.

I tell you, this "little online shop thing" isn't so little.

Meantime, my life has had some ups and downs. Thankfully, I'm good at concentrating on the ups and praying about the downs, although I realize a couple of my recent posts may have put that into question. I was a little whiney.

Krissy had her cervical biopsy today. No fun. But she's OK and we expect lab results on Monday. Meantime her doctor encouraged her to take tomorrow off because she really is having some pretty horrible cramps, but she said no, her office needs her tomorrow and her exact words to me, her mother, who said this, oh maybe a thousand times when she was growing up, were:

"Sometimes you just have to get over yourself and get on with it."

OK. I've made some mistakes in my life. But somehow, I stumbled around and raised one heck of a great daughter. The other one is pretty great too. :-)

So. I thought I was retired and life told me, you fool, get over yourself and get busy.

So I did.

To be honest, I'm not sure I really thought about what I'd be doing at this stage of my life. I can tell you, I never thought I'd be running a little business out of my home. I suspect if I weren't, I'd be bored beyond tears.

The alternative makes me cringe. I could be getting up and going outside my home, to a job I dislike, and my new grandchild would be in daycare. Good grief. I am sooo blessed that I can do this in my home and be here for my daughter and my grandchildren.

One thing's for sure - I can't remember the last time I was bored. LOL

Just one more reason I LOVE coming to visit you, dear Barb.

I loved this post, and I especially loved how you wrapped it up so neatly.

"piece of cake" . . . sure!

I knew the shop would be a hit!

And I love the comment about the combination of Zoloft and Ambien.

Barb - you are so "real"! Zoloft and Ambien have got me through many rough times over the last 4 years!

You have been one busy shoppe owner and I'm sure you will be even more busy in the future! The quality of your work is excellent! I have loved everything that I have ordered! Jim the sock monkey is sitting on my desk at work smiling at me everyday! He is even behaving like a good sock monkey should!

Hope Krissy feels better tomorrow and I'm keeping her my prayers!

I've been a regular reader for a few months now, but haven't commented a lot. By the way, I'm glad you're back on Bloglines. I missed reading you, but didn't know I was missing you until I got a ton of posts a couple days ago. Anyways, thank you so much for your honest posts. I love the pictures, recipes, and glimpses of your faith in your everyday life. Keep up the good work! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family (esp. Krissy right now as you all wait for the results).

Way to go, Barb! I am a little weary at the moment, and readign this makes sense to me. Get over it and get on. Well, I am paraphrasing here. And I am just saying again...I am SO proud of you!

I was hoping against hope that Krissy had already gotten some good news but I see it's hurry up and wait for test results, as usual.

Jessica is still in a lot of pain too, bless their hearts.

I had a feeling that you were going to find that you have more orders than you have time in the day to keep up with. I'm glad business is so good, but you've got to find a balance and get some "me" time in the midst of all that.

Take care of Barb first, 'kay? Zoloft and Ambien can only do so much and I love you healthy and comfortable more than wrecked and rich. :o)

I'm still praying for Krissy and all of you.

xoxoxo

Loved this post! The other half of the battle is being able to laugh at the craziness of it all :-)
So I'd guess a lot of our generation thought we'd be all settled at this stage, just coasting, waiting for retirement and enjoying life.
Ha! Here you are starting a business from home. I'm packing up my belongings and heading to another country where I have to learn a new language -- my turn with the zoloft and ambien! I'd be interested in hearing what your other readers "of a certain age" are doing...how many of them are where they thought they'd be?

The Lord always blesses us sometimes those blessing are harder to find than other times. I am so amazed. You didn't want to go out of the home and work you choose to stay home. No sooner was that choice remade then your Daughter needed you. the past few months have surely been a whirlwind. I am truly amazed by your simple faith that he lives and will help you through.

Thanks

So maybe someone else out there will re-find the fabric that ended up out of stock? Surely someone out there has a few yards of ladybug fabric sitting around because apparently Joann Fabric does not. And yes, it's pretty much attitude that makes all the difference, every single day. xoxo

PS I forgive you for Thumbelina and you dont want to replace her. I found her on Ebay for well over $100, so in my heart she's mine, she just lives at someone else's house.

To quote the bible ... and an eloquent Beatle ... "Life is what happens when you're making other plans."

I love it when people (including me) make the mistake of saying things like, "Oh, when things slow down a bit ...." HA!

I'm proud of your online store. I know it really is a lot of work, but it is work from your own home. You can wear your pjs and hold your granddaughter between sock monkeys. Love it.

Wow! I can only dream that my Etsy shop will one day be that sucessful! Congratulations. :-)

Hello dear Barb:-)

Finally catching up with all your news...I can see that you're still keeping as busy as a bee!! I had no doubts that you would do quite well with your little shoppe...your work is exquisite.

Avery is such a little darling, love that picture of her. Cameron is growing up so fast too, swimming and being potty trained...quite the accomplishments:-) I posted the first ultra sound picture of my grandbaby yesterday so it's really hit me now that there really is a grandbaby in my future!! hehe

I copied the recipes you've shared with us...I love any kind of stir fry and you make yours very similar to mine. I'm lucky that all my family enjoys Oriental food!

Take care of yourself and I'll now go see what you have left for sale in your shoppe:-) xoxo

Barb, this is my favorite quote from this whole post: "meantime, my life has had some ups and downs. Thankfully, I'm good at concentrating on the ups and praying about the downs...". A quote that I am very much taking to heart right now. And I love how Krissy quoted your quote. She sounds like as wonderful a woman as her mom.

I'm so happy your little shoppe has taken off so well.

Um...thanks for the little kick in the pants I needed, Barb (and Krissy) to get over myself and get on with things. I tend to want to wallow in whatever the problem du jour is, but what good is that?

I'm so proud of you, Dear Friend! Awesome store.

Barb,

I am so amazed and proud at how well you're doing with your online shop!

You've been such an encouragement to me to get my butt in gear to start my Sparkle and Charm Boutique. I've got the business Paypal account, I've got a handful of customers, and I'm working on getting the funds to get an online store set up (if only Susie would contact me, I'd be set)!

And who would've thought that custom made tutus would sell faster than hair bows, beaded jewelry, or beaded bookmarks?! :) I've got another 4th of July tutu to whip up, and then a birthday tutu, and then maybe I'll get down to deciding who will be designing my online store!

Anyway, I'm not surprised that your online store is such a success, you're a very creative and talented woman! Kudos to you!

And let Krissy know that she's in my prayers. You have every right to be so proud of her too!

Last but not least, stop over and enter to win an Energizer® Light on Demand™ product. I'm accepting entries through the weekend and selecting a winner on Monday and I want you to have a chance to win!

Just letting you know that I'm thinking of you and Krissy and praying for good results tomorrow!

I wish we could put our three little darling girls down on one of your soft blankies on the floor and see what they'd do! Yesterday I had them out on the grass on a blanket like yours, only not as soft, and they were holding hands - adorable!

So happy to hear that things are going so well for you! What a blessing to do work you enjoy from home and still be able to care for your precious grandchildren.
I know that must fill your heart with joy!

Barb, I sent my first PayPal invoice for $64.80 after completing a tutu order and it worked like a charm! And PayPal only charged me about a $2.50 fee, which I didn't think was too bad! :)
