A letter to my sister......

Dear Bev,

As you know, twenty-four hours ago I decided I'd bite the bullet and get out my little book, some knitting needles and some way expensive yarn, and teach myself to knit.

I'd like to thank you for the twenty-eight emails you've sent me since yesterday afternoon, assuring me that this is easy, you're there if I have any questions, and just inspiring me to venture out into the unknown with confidence that I can do this.

Really. You didn't have to do this post. I already knew you were behind me 100%.

That's what sisters are for, right? :-)

The least I can do is share my progress with you. But you must keep in mind, I've only been at this for twenty-four hours now. So cut me a little slack.

I whipped this little number out last night. You were absolutely right. That cable stitch running all down the front of this sweater was tricky! As you can see, I muddled through it. Not bad for my first attempt, right?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Here's where I'm really at. I'm actually feeling quite sure I can learn this because this only took me SIX HOURS.

Clearly, I'm making a coaster. Everybody knows pukey green knit coasters are all the rage right now.

I wouldn't have stuck it out this long without your encouragement. So thank you for that.

Love,
Barbtha

PS...It's true your bangs are a tad short in this photo. But I didn't do it. As I recall, I waited until you were in about the third grade before I massacred your bangs. I love you too much to post that photo.

In this photo, those short little bangs are cute! Like you. xoxoxo

Tiny little edit: If you don't get the connection between this post and the photo of Bev's seriously short little bangs, you didn't click on the link to her post. It all ties in quite nicely if you read her post. :-)

I don't know if I could love you as much if you actually learned in 6 hours and then made that BEAUTIFUL sweater. You would have been to good for me =)) But no worries...I LOVE YA=))

Keep up the great work.

That was too funny!

And you're right - pukey green knit coasters ARE all the rage now. In fact, I might have to go knit a few for myself.

Bev looks so cute! I wish I could figure out how to scan pictures properly so that they don't end up just in the corner of a large page. Very annoying!

I know you'll get it - it's not like you to quit trying before you achieve perfection.

Knitting is going to be pat of the topic of a post I've been planning for months - "I Used To . . . "

You almost had me there! And you're doing great! Have you joined Ravelry.com yet? : )

HILARIOUS! I knew you were joking when I saw that sweater. Had you learned to make that in 6 hours, I don't think I would ever have visited your blog again. I would have broken up with you.

I made a coaster my first go-around. Then E made it into a Barbie blanket.

Whatever :)

Oh! How funny! I can totally relate, only I gave up before the pot holder was completed. I still have the book though--and the yarn.

Aawww, sisterly love at its finest!

Seriously Barb, you're off to a great start. By the time your next grandchild is due, you'll have an entire layette ready for him or her! Maybe not in the pukey green, though.

You two are a riot! Loved this little exchange!

Knitting will be the bane of my existence. I've tried it multiple times and while I get the general idea of the mechanics, I can't seem to get comfortable with it. Crocheting seems to go so much faster...it makes it hard for me to stick with knitting for any project larger than a coaster.

LOL that was funny Barb, you and Bev crack me up.

HaHaHaHa! You girls crack me up! Nothing like sisterly love. That was so sweet of you to post a cute picture! Good luck on your knitting, I am waiting for my friend to get back from Singapore so she can show me how to do it....again! Thanks for your encouraging email! :)

What a great exchange between the two of you. And I have no doubt you'll have that sweater made someday!

this has got to be one of the funniest posts ever. Cracks me up!

I'm loving the knitting now. But it take me many many many many hours and tries to get there!

Keep me posted!

Nice of you to post the photo you chose of me, because the one you were looking for, with that lovely paisley thing tied around my head was unbearably ugly/dorky. Still what on earth was Mom thinking cutting my bangs 1/2" long? And I have to be honest I swear for a minute I thought you'd been holding out on me and you'd knit that sweater. If you had even I would have broken up with you and I've been your fan my entire life! BTW, I seriously think you're doing great, really. You'll be amazed how quickly you get it, as far as you've come already. Don called me 'the angry knitter' for the first three months because I was mad every single second I was knitting. It's only been in the past month or so that I've stopped foaming at the mouth all the time, so you're doing fabulously. xoxo

You girlies are too funny!
I will probably never try the knitting thing.
That is a cute picture! And you know, I think my parents cut my bangs about that short when I was little too, what was up with that!

I think we need to shut you two in a room together and lock the door. :) And no knitting needles!

Too funny. Isn't it funny that no matter how badly our mothers cut our hair, at that age, we're adorable anyway? So cute.

I remember giving myself a "shag" in 1975; and giving my poor mother heart failure!

Both you & your sis have given me a chuckle this morning - thanks.

Remind me to stay on your good side, Barb... and to never let you near my 3rd grade pictures.

Barb, you're ahead of me. I got my book, my needles and my yarn (it's green too). Read through the instructions a couple of times. Then was stopped by a migraine. I actually knew it was coming on and knew I wouldn't really get to knit when I started. But I was to excited not to take a peek. I'm hoping to try this weekend. By the looks of it you're going to be much better at it than me!

Oh mercy I was just dying when I saw that sweater and thought there is NOOO way!! You are too funny Barb!! And that picture of Bev looks just like Sarah's oldest boy!!!! How funny, put your fingers over the hair and you have Caiden!! ( her oldest boy) how funny....
You are a hoot, I love you and Bev!!

Kelly said...

You are hilarious! "Knowing" you, you probably will be whipping out sweaters like the one pictured in no time:-)

Jen said...

First of all I'm laughing because I was amazed at the finished sweater....then kept reading about the coaster...you are too funny. Still chuckling here.

You guys are hilarious. I'd love to be a fly on the wall at your family reunions.

"Puky little green coasters are all the rage"

I laughed so hard.

Grrrrrr you actually had me believing you had knitted that sweater! LOL You know, I tried knitting when I was still in high school...I knitted a very tiny scarf...that was the start and the end of my knitting career because I really didn't enjoy it at all! Throughout the years it's still something I've got no interest in. I did get into hooking rugs at one time...think I got tired of the looks I'd get whenever someone asked me what I did and I'd say "I'm into hooking"! lol xoxo

Too funny! I must admit you had me for half a second - I was like "SHut Up!"

Hi Barb,

I've been a lurker on your site since December, when I went on Google to find a refresher on making fleece blankets and found your tutorial! You are such an inspiration, girl! Thank-you.

I teach first grade myself, and know my little girls would love those caps! Please keep a new fan in mind for your giveaway. :)

Now THAT'S funny! But your green coaster does look very nice!! Hang in there--it gets easier, very quickly!!

You didn't fool me . . . 'cuz I read Bev's post first. Ha! Ha!

I am impressed, though. The last time I tried to knit, I couldn't even get the yarn and the needle connected when it came to casing on! LOL!! I can do scads o' crafts, but knitting just isn't one of them. And your coaster's looking pretty swell. If it was mine (assuming I was capable of casting on), it would be a quadrilateral, only if I were lucky, but in no way, shape, or form, would it resemble a rectangle. Oh, there would also be areas of VERY tight stitches all scrunched up and VERY loose stitches giving the appearance of an inordinately loose weave. HA! HA!

All the best to you in your knitting endeavor! And that Bev is so darned cute! What a sweet photo. :D
