It's not just your grandma's doillies...a giveaway

This giveaway is now closed. Winners will be announced momentarily.

I taught myself to crochet...about thirty-five years ago. At the time, I didn't know a single soul who knew how to crochet and could teach me. But I wanted to learn. I recall that I wanted to learn how to make tiny little baby booties.

See this little book? This was published in 1955.
I bought this little book in the early 70's.
I learned everything I know about crochet from this one little book.
I can make anything that a crochet pattern has ever been written for.

Last Saturday, using a couple of ounces of leftover pink yarn,
I whipped out a sweet little stocking cap for Avery.
It took two hours. How sweet is that?

Then I whipped out another one, using pink eyelash yarn.
Little girls love, love sparkly foofoo things like this.
I know this because I made all the little girls in my daughter Mandy's
third grade class a stocking hat like this one, a couple of years ago.
Mandy's little students think her mom rocks. LOL

I clipped a little how-to article from the Rocky Mountain News, in 1982. A woman named Pat did a weekly column and for the life of me, I can no longer remember the name of it, but I vividly remember the day she published this pattern. I couldn't begin to tell you how many times I've used this. It's so simple and easy, I thought I'd share it with you.

SIMPLE STOCKING CAP

"When visiting us, our daughter-in-law, Debbie, discovered that she hadn't brought a warm cap for our grandson, Kevin. So she asked me if I had some spare yarn and a crochet hook.

After I gathered the materials, Debbie whipped out a darling little ribbed stocking cap in just a couple of hours. I was intrigued with the shaping of the cap, so I asked her to show me how she did it.

She used worsted weight yarn and a size J hook, but you could use any yarn you wish with a hook size suitable for your choice of yarn.

First, work a chain for the desired length of the cap from top to bottom, plus an extra inch or two for a turned-back cuff. Try working a chain of about 10 inches. You can adjust the length of your chain to make various-size caps. The entire cap is done in single crochet worked through the back loop of each stitch.

For the first row, work a single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each remaining chain. Chain 1 and turn. On Row 2, work a single crochet in each stitch of the previous row to within 4 stitches. Chain 1, turn.

For Row 3, single crochet to the end of the row. Chain 1, turn. Row 4: Work a single crochet in all stitches, including the skipped stitches of Row 2. Chain 1, turn. Row 5: Single crochet to end of row. Chain 1, turn. Place a safety pin at the end of this row. Repeat rows 2 through 5 over and over until cap is wide enough to fit around head.

The end marked by the pin will be the bottom of the cap, which will be the end you will want to have wide enough to fit around the head. When the desired width is reached, end with the completion of Row 3 of the pattern and sew the side edges together.

With worsted-weight yarn you can get a cap out of approximately 2 ounces of yarn. If you have a lot of leftover yarn, you could stripe the cap by changing colors on every fourth row."

Does that sound like Greek to you? I can't tell you how easy it is to learn to crochet. But maybe I can help a couple of you, if this is something you think you'd like to learn.

A GIVEAWAY

I'd like to give a little starter kit, to two people.
I'm including the way newer version of the little book I learned from (published in 2001), a size "I" crochet hook and a skein of very pretty peach-colored Vanna's Choice medium weight yarn.

About three years ago, Mandy and several of her girlfriends asked me to teach them to crochet. At the time, fun fur scarves were all the rage and they wanted to learn how to make them. So every Sunday afternoon they came to my house and oh my word, what fun we had. They all learned the basics of crochet well enough to make themselves scarves.

That's when I discovered working with a heavier weight smooth yarn and using a larger sized hook is best for learning. You can move on to the crazy adorable textured yarns after you learn the basics. And just for the record, you can also move on to the tiniest, lightest weight yarn and the microscopic hooks, known as "steels," if you want to make a doilie. Which I have also been known to do. LOL

If you're interested in learning to crochet and this little kit would motivate you to jump in and do it, leave a comment. I'll leave this giveaway open until the beginning of next week.

As for me? I'm going right back to my 1955 how-to book.
Page 28. "How to Knit."

Because, you know. You're never ever too old to learn a new skill.

For the record, the little book I bought so many years ago actually teaches crochet, knitting, tatting, and embroidery. The newer edition, the one I'm giving away, is devoted entirely to crochet.

Last Friday night I finished reading The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs. This idea for a giveaway popped into my mind while I was reading that book. I won't do a review here but I will say two things. It's a wonderful book, warm and cozy and just a really nice read. And it reminded me that some feminine arts transcend time and should never be lost.

Oh. My. Goodness. Barb - this is the honest truth - I taught myself how to crochet FROM THAT VERY SAME BOOK! My mom had that book for years and years! That is so weird - I had totally forgotten all about it until I opened your blog today - talk about a blast from the past!!!
And I am just starting The Friday Night Knitting Club!
Do you think this means we were separated at birth! LOL

I would love to learn how to crochet. Please inlcude me in your giveaway. Thank you for your generosity.

I can knit simple projects although it's been a long time, I might need a refresher course. I just checked out the Friday Night Knitting Club from the library but I haven't started it yet.

What a great idea for a give-away. I would love to learn some crochet skills. I love to knit, but I'd like to learn at least a little crochet, often knitting patterns include some for the edges and such and I'm always totally clueless about it.

Jenni said...

one of my co-workers crochets all the time and it looks so easy, but I've never learned....I'd love the opportunity, so please sign me up!

Teresa said...

Please add me to the drawing. My grandmother taught me to crochet "Granny squares" years ago, but the ability is buried in my brain. I actually bought a new hook and some yarn a couple months ago with the intention of re-learning. I would love to crochet scarves for Christmas! (tpearson@uga.edu)

I believe you know from our previous conversations that I would desperately love to learn to sew and to crochet! I think this is the perfect opportunity, so please keep me in mind!
Lots of love!!!

Please include me in this wonderful and fun giveaway!
Thanks.

Oh please include me! I taught myself to cross stitch last year and am ready to move on to something else. I've been having a hard time choosing between crochet and knitting. I so wish there were more older ladies out there willing to teach us clueless youngers!

Anonymous said...

Count me in! I know how to make a chain and a single crochet and that's it!

I am looking forward to reading the Friday Night Knit Club book. I almost bought it yesterday at BJ's but my name is on the list at the library so I decided to wait it out.

Your hats are cute!

Well, as you know I already know how to crochet, so you can skip me for the giveaway. But this is a GREAT idea for a giveaway, Barb!

I did snag that wonderful stocking cap pattern, though. I just made 2 stocking caps from 2 different patterns and I'm not sure I like either one. I haven't decided if I'm going to send them with the baby gifts I'm mailing in a few days or not....

Have a great week, my friend. ;o)

Love you,

Diane

I can knit - I taught myself ages ago, but I can't crochet. I'd love to learn, so please enter me in the drawing.

This is so nice of you to do this. Which is not surprising, as you are one of the nicest people I "know."

The caps are so cute! Avery will look so cute wearing them.

nanatrish said...

This is so exciting. I love the pink hat. I have a granddaughter, Avery Tate, that will be 8 next month and she would love it...so I need to learn how to make it. I would love the opportunity to be in the running for the giveaway. I love your blog and all I can do is chain stitch. This could make a huge difference in my life :)

Deborah said...

Oh yes - crochet, so much better than knitting. At least if you make a mistake, you can tear out the stuff until you get back to the mistake. With knitting - yuck! So yes, please count me in. I'd love to get your book. I'll rush right out and get some yarn too! Oh, and those crochet hook thingies. If I win, you can let me know at dmj53(at)hotmail(dot)com

I learned to knit, just the basics, about a year ago with someone teaching me. I would love to learn how to crochet too. Especially with baby number 2 right around the corner, those hats are to cute!

I don't know Barb... I would like to learn to crochet again... all I was able to do was crochet b.i.g...l.o.n.g...c.h.a.i.n.s....! And in knitting, I start with 15 rows and end up with 23! Maybe I'm hopeless?? Please enter me in the drawing and maybe we'll find out! :)

Hi Barb, this is Sema delurking. I don't know how to crotchet, but have always wanted to learn. Count me in. What a fun give away!

Julie said...

Okay, you are just NOT going to believe this, Barb. I HAVE the exact little green book.

Seriously.

My Gram gave it to me YEARS ago when I was tryint to teach myself to knit and crochet.

I never did learn, cuz I'm the sort of person who needs to learn by doing, not by reading a confusing set of instructions in a book.

I wish we were neighbors, cuz I would LOVE to learn to crochet OR knit now.

Seriously.

Karin said...

Please enter me-- thank you.

Jo-Ann said...

We are expecting our first grandson in June and I just finished the burp clothes you gave instructions for and I love them!
Now, with the instruction booklet maybe I could make Levi a hat too!
I love your posts.

My mother had that same book. I went through it as a child and tried each skill. I was a disaster at tatting. I had a hard time with crocheting, which my mother is fantastic at, so I tried knitting. It bored me because I only learned how to cast on and do one stitch, badly. I loved embroidery and stuck to that and cross-stitch for years.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Lisa said...

Oh, I would love to learn how to crochet! Please enter me in your contest. Thank you so much for offering this. If I don't win I will go out and purchase the book!

Renee said...

Ok, I'm not entering, because I have some crochet hooks and even a book on how-to. Now I just need to see if I can follow the instructions. But I've been meaning to comment for awhile to say how much I LOVE your blog and just how incredibly cute that second hat is.

I was so happy when i learned how to crochet although i would have been happier if it was prior to my son's birth rather than a year after because time got gobbled up but i love to crochet. I recently learned (am learning) to knit and find it very soothing too although it took me a lot longer to get. Hope you enjoy learning the new craft! Nice giveaway too. I was so hoping you weren't giving the one you learned from - it's just too cute. Oh, and if you get stuck with knitting, there's a great website www.knittinghelp.com that has tons of info and videos. It has helped me tremendously.

Linda said...

The hats are adorable Barb. I'm going to save the pattern. I can crochet, but my "true love" is knitting. I know you are going to love it. No matter how many other things I learn to do, I always come back to the knitting. It is somehow so soothing and peaceful. I'm sure you will soon be a great knitter!!

Pam said...

This is Libbyline and my mom says my grandma used to have this book a very long time ago. She doesn't have it anymore, so I can't learn to crochet from it.

I really, really want to learn, and this looks great, Miss Barb.

Please, please, count me in on your contest!! I would love, love to win!

Thanks!

Jean said...

This would be so awesome! I just love to create with my hands and would love to learn a new skill, something very practicel affordable, and something I could take with me anywhere.

I would so love to have this, Barb. I'm teaching myself to crochet. Knitting is another story. My DAUGHTER (who is 15) is trying to teach me, but she's just learning too. Cute hats!

Jana (sidetrack'd) said...

Those stocking caps are just adorable!

There are so many things that I wish my grandmother could teach me (crochet being one of them), but time and distance prevent it. I would love to learn how and to be able to teach Little one day.

screechingchaos said...

Barb,

Did you know that you could knit/crochet wool 'longies' and covers and make a fortune.

Really. I kid you not. It is hip to cloth diaper and use knitted and crocheted items as the water proof coverings.

Me? I'm totally hopeless with stuff like this. I can't sit still long enough. sigh....

You are SO crafty Barb! I'd love to learn how to crochet, as I'm hoping for a little girl of my own in the future! :)

Barb, I have the green book, too! I found it with my mother's knitting and crochet needles. I'm not going to sign up for the giveaway -- although I think it's a wonderful idea. Just last weekend I set up my sewing machine and have been making things for my daughter, and taught her and a friend how to sew pajamas. I think I'll stick with sewing for a while:)

I will definitely have to read that book.

I taught myself to crochet, too, but never did cute little things like that - mostly afghans and shawls. I would love to win your give-away, so that I can give it to Kristen. She wants to learn to crochet and I don't think I can remember enough to teach her!

I learned to knit the basics in 6th grade - we had a flu epidemic going on, and our teacher didn't want others to get behind, so she taught the ones who weren't sick how to knit Christmas presents for our family.

Barb,
I would love to learn to crochet. I think I learned it a long time ago, but I only have a memory of making one long, continuous chain!! I also have learned out to knit, but I always have to have my mother show me again!!! I'm teaching myself to embroider right now & it's looking very sweet on some of the outfits & bags I've been sewing!! Crochet would just top everything off!!!
Thanks for the chance & can't wait until you get to hold that baby!!!!

I have recently remembered how to knit, though...and I'd dearly love to win that knitting fiction book you mentioned! Sounds like just the type of book I love!

Well Hello Barb! I've been missing from blogland for a bit, and just caught up on your last 14 posts! There are some blogs I can hit "all read" on, and some that I just can't!

I just had to tell you that my mom had that exact same book when I was growing up, and I'd be willing to bet she still does...I'm going to have to go and check that out, because now it's bugging me.

And I also wanted you to know that I never once thought you wore tights...hee-hee-hee! Although I think I still want to grow up to be you...if it weren't for all these kids running around, I'd probably be you now; cleaning like crazy whenever I felt like it, working on 3 different projects at one time and leaving them out until they were finished, and beginning and ending each day with a book...sounds pretty much like where I want to be. Of course, I wouldn't trade the kids for all the free time in the worls, but I still look forward to the day when I have a little more freedom!

It was nice to visit with you today!

Hello Colorado girlfriend!

I am so with you on the knitting, Barb! My four girls went over to their grandma's house because they wanted to learn to knit. She is a fantastic knitter. When they came home after one day, they were making scarves. "Here, Mom. Do it like this. You just...and then you...just like that! See how easy that is?" they said. Meanwhile, my fingers were tangling together, making some stitches too tight, some way too loose, and even dropping some off the needles altogether!

I'm thinking I'd have much better luck with crocheting. There's only one needle. Or hook, I think. I have that many less chances of messing it up!

So yes, I'd love to win this giveaway. I could carry it with me in my bag and work on it during our staff meetings! My boss would love that.

But whether I'm one of your lucky winners or not, thanks for the smile today!

P.S. My mom taught herself to knit, too. I have no doubt that you will quickly surpass the challenge! Enjoy!

I'm so interested in learning to crochet. Please keep me in mind for your drawing.

I teach first grade, and I have some little girls in my class who would love those caps, too!

Thanks,

Jolie

I have tried to learn to crochet - TWICE! First time was in high school. The second time I was an adult and I wanted to make a throw. I couldn't keep the tension right and ended up with a long RUFFLE. I need HELP!

I would love to learn how to crochet. I started to learn when my daughter was born almost 4 years ago. I still have tons of yarn and have a hard time understanding patterns. Please include me in your giveaway. By the way, I love your blog.

On Thursday I turned 29 and made a list of things to accomplish before I turned 30. One of them was to acquire a crafty skill--crochet would work!

Please include me in your giveaway! thanks you!!

Am I too late for this? If not, please include me! I've always wanted to learn to crochet.

Hope you're well Barb! I've just returned from a lovely vacation in Puerto Rico to a foot of snow here in NYC. Oh well, at least we had a week of sun! :-)

I learned to knit and crochet with that same book, but I wonder what happened to it through the years. I haven't crocheted in forever. I guess if I win, I will have to start.

This would be PERFECT for my 13-year-old daughter! She has just recently expressed an interest to her great-grandmother who used to knit, crochet, sew, you name it. My daughter asked her if she could teach her, however, she has arthritis in both hands & therefore is unable to do so :(

Thank you for offering this generous giveaway!

My mother had that book when I was young, so not only would it help me learn to do all those crafty things, but it would bring back memories.
