The new mommy or the bride leaves her shower with a handful of little slips of paper. Or a little notebook.
I gave Krissy a baby shower a month before Cameron was born and I really wanted all the guests to write a piece of advice for her, but I wanted it to be something she'd really treasure, not a handful of little slips of paper she'd read and toss.
I'm a scrapbooker and I have so many scrapbooking supplies (neatly organized, of course, LOL) that it occurred to me a memory book would be perfect. So when I gave Krissy her shower before Cameron was born, it was as simple as could be to set it up.
I didn't realize how much this little book meant to her until she told me her sister-in-law was giving her a shower for our new baby girl and she asked if I would please, please set up the memory book table again so she'd have a special book from Avery's shower too. She didn't want to suggest it to her sister-in-law because Angela's not a scrapbooker and would have had to buy everything and that could get costly. But for me? No problem. I've been known to get a little over the top with my hobbies so I knew I had the basic things we'd need on hand. :-)
So I told Krissy, not to worry - I think I can do that. :-)
Let me show you how simple this is.
Krissy and I went to Hobby Lobby and she chose a very sweet pink gingham scrapbook album. It measures six by six inches. You don't want a big twelve by twelve inch album - time is a factor in this endeavor so it's best to keep it small and simple.
About four times a year Hobby Lobby puts all scrapbooking albums on sale for half price and we walked into that sale the day we shopped there. So we got this $10 album for $5.
I looked through the things I have on hand and put together some simple things the guests could work with. We did buy some additional stickers, but guess what? All stickers at Hobby Lobby were 50% off too!
We also went through my paper stash and bought a few other baby girl themed designs and colors and I cut all those down to six inches by six inches so they'd fit right into the sleeves in the album.
We made sure there were several choices of alphabet letters. People really like to write things with letter stickers. We bought a couple but I had several in my supplies too.
I provided several of my edgers, a variety of pens, tweezers for removing little stickers from their pages, photo safe glue and a few pieces of scrap paper just in case anyone wanted to get fancy...and they did...with borders!
Then we bought a few very adorable packages of baby themed stickers. I tell you, it's like when you find yourself coloring a page in your child's coloring book, when no one's looking. Grown women love stickers! LOL
I brought one of my portable craft tables and a couple of chairs to the shower and this is how we set it up. Very simple memory book station.
The evening before the shower, I made the opening page. I glued the shower invitation to the inside cover because it's a keepsake and I made a very simple "Welcome Avery" cover page. The idea was to let all the guests know they didn't have to be scrapbooking gurus to make a page for Krissy and Avery's book. Angela sent out Precious Moments invitations, so I used sweet Precious Moments stickers on the title page.
There were sixteen guests at Krissy's baby shower yesterday. Here are a few samples of the adorable but simple pages, with their sweet messages, they made for the memory book.

I'd already made my page. It took me ten minutes. I really wanted to make everyone comfortable and I wanted them to know all that mattered was the thoughts they wanted to express, not the level of scrapbooking expertise. It worked. It worked really well as a matter of fact.
The girl on the left is Alicia. She and Krissy were college roommates and are best friends forever. The girl on the left is Elisa, another friend. Obviously these two are enjoying making their pages. Alicia did a "butterfly kisses" thing and got so excited, we all had to search our purses for a tube of lipstick that matched her page because she wanted to put a "kiss" on it. The thought she put into her page is absolutely precious to Krissy.
There are so many things about this that are great, I don't know where to start, but here are a few.
Krissy will treasure this forever and someday when Avery's old enough, she will too. This will be handed down to her as a very precious keepsake someday.
If you don't have basic scrapbooking supplies on hand, I'll bet you know someone who does. I can't imagine a friend not being willing to loan you some edgers and maybe even willing to give you some paper and such. I would. In a heartbeat. And if you don't know someone like that, you know what? A sweet book, some paper, a pen and some stickers works fine too. People like to be creative and they especially like to feel like it's not a competion for best in show. Actually, the simpler, the better.
Throughout the shower, the guests will meander over to the table and sit there for a few minutes and make a page. The table itself is intriguing. So much fun creative stuff! It doesn't detract from the shower - it enhances it because people really enjoy doing this.
And the best thing of all? Grandmothers and aunts and special friends who couldn't attend the shower can contribute to the book too. After the shower I gave before Cameron was born, Krissy and I sent the background pages, a few stickers and a note saying how much we wished they could have been there to several of her favorite friends and relatives. We enclosed the correct sized, stamped envelope (so they wouldn't fold the page) and every single one of them returned their page. So really, the fun continued long after the shower and Krissy has a wonderful memory book from Cameron's shower. And she'll have the same thing from Avery's shower.
You know, this works for baby showers, bridal showers, special anniversary parties, special birthdays...any special event you want to have a keepsake like this from.
It's just a very simple way to make a truly meaningful keepsake from an event that is very special to someone you love.

what a great idea Barb! For my shower when I was pg w/Kayla they did the pieces of advice, but they were written on colorful index cards. I then scrapbooked those into Kayla's baby book - but I really like your idea! I can just imagine all the pink fun that happened at the shower yesterday - especially with 16 guests! I'm sure Avery has a closestful of adorable clothes already!
That is just the sweetest, simplest idea I have seen in a long time. I will remember this when I throw a shower sometime. Great!!!
What a sweet idea! I bet that will be a family heirloom.
Barb, this is an absolutely fantastic idea! And I plan to steal it if my sweet nephew Thomas ever becomes a big brother. ;) I may use it for something else if he doesn't! I love, love, love this.
I love this idea -- it is SO special and you're right, Avery will treasure it when she's older. I will have to keep this in mind for when we have a little one! :)
Barb, you are so creative! I love all the pages but especially the one you made. Even your handwriting is beautiful.
that's a wonderful idea! and what you've made is so cute!
Aw, wonderful idea, Barb. I scrapbook too, so I'll keep this one in mind.
Blessings,
~Toni~
What a wonderful idea, Barb! I know that your daughter, and grandaughter will consider this a keepsake!
That is just the sweetest idea!!!
I read your post about the giveaways and I have to agree. I have entered my friend's giveaways by commenting as I normally would do anyway, but have stayed away from the hub this time because it feels more like a feeding frenzie :)
A wonderful idea! I'm doing a shower for my sister in law in March and I'm stealing your idea :) Keep sharing those ideas.
This is an incredible idea. What a special keepsake. And my goodness, you're a wonderful mom and grandma! :-)
Hi Barb,
I am coming out of lurkdom to say hi :) I was going to respond to your Sad post because I totally agree. I love the Bloggy Giveway for the sheer reason of finding more blogs out there to read :)
I love your memory book idea - what a precious precious idea and it is so wonderful that Krissy appreciates your talents as much as she does because you are a very creative, gifted, talented woman :)
Oh and your Chelsea is completely adorable and a dog that size wouldn't take up nearly as much bed space as my chocolate lab does :)
Anyway, I have been subscribed for quite sometime for your blog and always look forward to reading your posts.
so cute! what a great idea!
i'm nto exoecting grandchildren for a very long time, hopefully I'll remember this sweet idea!
This is a wonderful idea! I will keep it in mind, especially as my own boys are getting old enough to be getting married and having children in the next several years.
One little tip I'd throw in, and you may have done this, is to put something on the invitation about coming with advice for the guest of honor. I know when I come to a shower and they hand out 3x5 cards asking for advice, I blank out, even though I've been married for 29 years and a mother for 23. I wouldn't mention it will be in the form of a scrapbook page, though, because that will scare some people until they come and see how simply they can do it.
My niece did something similar for my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary, only she had people make out their pages beforehand so we presented it to them at the party. My mil loved and and showed it to everyone she could.
Oh, I love this idea! I am tucking it away for future reference.
And yes, I totally agree with your sad post. I don't see it now but I read it on bloglines.
I am not a busy, regular blogger. I just have never gotten into the groove but I sure read a lot of them! Yours is one I never miss. Just know that a lot of folks do read you and yes, there are also a lot who just want to win. But it goes with the territory. I have participated twice and one of my winners never even sent me her address. I changed my prize this time so folks have to at least make an effort to see who I am.
Try not to let it bother you. I know it does so maybe next time, you can opt out instead of feeling sad. If it makes you unhappy, you shouldn't do it. You have a sensitive, caring soul and I hate to see you unhappy.
Have a good day and remember that there are tons of us who visit you daily 'cause we like you. :0)
That is really sweet! I don't know anyone who wouldn't cherish this. :)
For my sister I bought an album and put the papers in it but not every page was decorated so nicely. Honestly, I didn't think of that amidst all the food stuff that my mom and I were taking care of.
I love to scrap too - gotta get back to it b/c I'm falling way behind. Thing is, I don't get to do the pretty pinky pages because I have boys. That's why I am planning on scrapping my childhood (I told my mom I would put the albums together and she can journal in it). I just have to scan the slides and then print out the size photos I want. Yup...that's on the old to-do list which is low on priority right now. That's what happens when the boys are young and responsiblities are great!
Barb, I read your blog faithfully everyday. I read it because it is interesting. I have a Friendship Cake sitting on my counter right now, a little late for Christmas but I wanted to try it anyway. Your baby shower idea about the advice book is one I will use in the future. I haven't entered your contest I really just skimmed the post. I don't come here for the free things, although I think I might have entered one in the past. I come here because You are welcoming, sharing and friendly and I just wanted you to know that.
Sherry
Barb- that is a great and thoughtful idea! Especially how those that couldn't be there could have a hand in it, too. You are too sweet.
Steph
Barb-this book is beautiful! Avery will cherish it, I'm sure. What a sweet, sweet idea for a baby shower. I love it!
I also wanted to reply to your post about the giveaways. I agree with you 100%! I participated in the 1st one last summer and was delighted to have so many visiters to my blog! However, most didn't even look at my blog past that post. The winner of my giveaway never even acknowledged receipt of my prize. I won a few other contests, and one of them never mailed me the prize! I started feeling like some people were just entering to "win" something, not because they really had an interest in what was being given away. So now I take my time and visit as many of the giveaways as I can. I try to read their blogs a bit and I only enter the contest if it's something I'm truly interested in. After all, shouldn't it go to someone who would really just be thrilled to death to have it? Just my 2 cents. LOL! Have a wonderful day Barb!
That is a really sweet idea Barb :)
I have to reply to your post about giveaways and I agree with you and this is the reason why I don't join in and participate in the giveaways. I don't give anything away and I don't enter to win anything either. It's just not my "cup of tea" if you will.
I'm sorry that people are just zipping through and not even taking the time to read your wonderful blog, their loss not yours!
Hope you have a wonderful day!
Hugs,
Sandra
I love this shower idea! Certainly beats goofy shower games. It's also a no cost - no pressure way to introduce some to scrapbooking that have been intimidated by it.
What an awesome idea! I bet Krissy is so glad you did this -I am sure it will last through the years and be a treasured memory book for both Krissy and Avery.
-Andrea
We did this at a shower too, and it was so much fun and relaxed. What a beautiful treasure for the mommy to be to have.
This is such a great idea, Barb. I did this for my girls' 1st birthdays. Each guest decorated a page and wrote a note to the 'birthday girl' wishing them a happy birthday and giving them advice. It also worked well for my brother's 40th birthday!
I love this idea! My best friend did one of these for my first born. What a treasure! I wish that I would have had them for the other two as well.
Re: your Sad post, I think that the Giveaway Carnival does turn into a feeding frenzy as one of the other comments said. There are so many people participaing now that you really can't go through and read anything so I haven't looked at any that I don't already subscribe to. I bet alot of people will feel like you. I bet they will end up not joining the carnival, and only do "off season" giveaways to their everyday readers! It is great in theory, though, that it can be used to drum up new friends and readers! Too bad it doesn't always work out that way.
Thank you so much for sharing this, complete with the detailed pictures! I love this idea, and even as an avid scrapbooker, woudln't have been able to come up with the best way to do it. Now I can do it too! This is awesome, and thank you for your inspiration!
What a wonderful, special idea! It is so much more meaningful than those little scraps of paper. Thank you for sharing!
Wow, I can't even begin to tell you what a great idea this is. What a beautiful keepsake. We did something similar as a going away gift for a friend except we scrapped favorite recipes. I can't wait to "meet" little Avery.
What a wonderful idea!
What a great idea for a shower. I have something similar for Sera. In the China adoption community, it's popular to exchange squares of fabric and a wish. The wish is a card with a wish and a small sample of the fabric. Most, if not all, the wishes are "scrapbooked". I did my very first scrapbook with these wishes and had a quilt made from the fabric squares. When Sera is older, she'll be able to match the fabric in her quilt to the wish in her scrapbook.
What a sweet idea for a baby shower, Barb! I love to scrapbook, too, although I don't do it often. But, I did make one for my grandson who graduated from HS last May. I took memories of his football years and did pages on different things. He loved it and it will be something he will treasure for years. I did the large one for him, too, and left one sleeve empty for his graduation items. I also attached a sleeve for a CD to the back and enclosed a movie my son had made of excerpts from his football games.
That is a sweet idea - and actually something I have done at showers before! It is wonderful to put so much thought and love into something special - I think it makes a new mama and baby feel very, very special!
What a lovely gift! I left you an award - come over and collect it!
Hi Barb,
My goodness, I checked in on you twice on Sunday and nothing. Today I check in (Tuesday) and you've practically written a novel! LOL
I adore this baby shower idea. You are the absolute DIVA of household cleverness. If I could possibly presesnt you with an award, ribbon or TIARA, I surely would.
Yes, I would.
What a wonderful idea, Barb! The pages for baby Avery are just adorable.
I think I'll pass this along to a couple of friends with whom I'm coordinating a bridal shower. Thank you for the inspiration!
i've done the "give advice" thing at showers before, but not quite the way as you described! your way is so much funner (yes, let's count it as a word). you're right, it would work for other special occasions as well. as usual, thanks so much for sharing. i'll be trying your meatloaf and chocolate chip cookie recipes later this week, too.
have a great day, barb!
Oh Barb what a wonderful idea! I have 3 children and have been to way to many Baby Showers to count and I have never seen anything so wonderful! I want one! I think if I ever find myself (also a scrapbooker) giving a shower I will use this great idea!
Happy Mommy
This is a great idea! I can already see the albums flying off the shelves at Michaels and Hobby Lobby all over the country! xooox
Oh, I truly wish I had a thimbleful of your creativity in my body!
Kristen was worried she wouldn't love Feisty as much as Care Bear - unwarranted fear, of course. And now she's had that love quadrupled!
Awesome Idea! My SIL did something similar, she scrap booked the index cards with pictures of the guests it is so fun!
Thanks for sharing!
Did you take the Sad post off?
I agreed with you, by the way - I think that it's too bad, because there are SO many contests to enter and a lot of those blogs are never going to see the entrants again. :(
What a lovely shower idea! You're so great at this sort of thing!
I can vouch for how fun this is. We did this for my friend's shower almost 10 years ago--time flies! And I think I'll revisit it again for a shower I'm throwing in March. You described it all so well, Barb.
Maybe we should call you: Barbtha. :)
Barb, what a pleasure it is to read your blog here today and as Dawn said to have just a tiny teeny little bit of your craft skills would be ever so handy....I love this idea and think it would be a treasure for forever.
I have enjoyed re-visiting you here today.
you have my best wishes always
Lee-ann
Re your comment to me today - I read the Little House series one year in the dead of winter - the one where they had to twist corn stocks together to burn - I shivered through the whole book! I could not have done what she did, no way in any form. But I could have lived in that nice little town in Minnesota that Betsy and Tacy lived in. Maude Hart Lovelace made it sound so delightful! Different economic circumstances, for sure!
I'm going to e-mail you a question. Watch for it!
This could have been a WFMW! You're so crafty and smart, Barb. You amaze me!
Very sweet idea! I bet she loves it.
Hey There! Im a lurker and just came across your page. Just wanted to say hi! Im excited about this post, as I love scrapbooking and have a baby due in March as well! :) The babyshower is in 2 weeks.
My page is set to private, but if you would like to become a reader as well, shoot me an email and I'd love to add you :)
Have a good night
That is one of the most thoughtful ideas I have ever seen. What a treasure!
I love it! I'm not a scrapbooking whiz, but that looks like something even I could do. I'll keep it in mind, because as a pastor's wife, there will definitely be times to use this idea!
VERY cute!!
You always have the best ideas.
A truly fabulous idea! I only wish I had read this right BEFORE our daughter's wedding shower...
Definitely will be using this suggestion for lots of different parties.
What a wonderful idea! You're a great mom! ;-)
What a darling idea!
I am new to your blog and it's such a blessing and encouragement and inspiration to me!
What a great idea! I'm sure that Krissy will treasure Avery's book - as she does Cameron's.
You always think of the best things!
How brilliant. Just adorable. I just love it all/ I only had one shower with Miller and it was with Sunday School...we did Olive garden..it was nice but nothing like this. How special.
Such a great shower idea!
For my sister's wedding, I made a scrapbook to be used as the guest book. It was all complete, with photos of my sister and her hubby (as kids, too!), and I supplied index cards for the guests to write their wishes on. They slipped right into a few pages at the back of the book.
I love this idea. It's so cute and very special!
