A great parenting resource

Recently I was contacted by White Post Media and asked if I would become a member of a network of women bloggers who receive Christian resources and review them on our blogs. I quickly agreed and received my first resource last Saturday.

I received a dvd kit, Effective Parenting in a Defective World by Chip Ingram from Walk Thru the Bible. What I received, and what you see pictured above, is the leader kit which includes nine sessions on three DVD's, one Leader's Guide and one Course Workbook.

I've watched the first few sessions, and let me tell you, I'm impressed. My very first impression is that I really like Chip Ingram and his whole approach to parenting children in today's scary world. He's soft spoken and gentle but his words pack a powerful punch.

He says,

"As a parent of four children, I know firsthand the perils that confront families today. The world is a defective place. And it seems more and more difficult to create a family environment in which children can learn God's ways. Over the past 30-40 years, there has been a marked shift away from a culture that supports Christian values. Parents who long to raise their children in the truth of God's word can feel isolated and alone.

But you're not. I believe that despite the defects of our world, God wants to equip parents to be effective leaders of their families. It's a different world and parents need a different approach if they are to succeed."

This would be a wonderful study for church groups or even just small groups of parents who come together, say weekly, to do these lessons together. All the resources your group would need can be found by going to the Walk Thru the Bible website and clicking on the "Store" tab. Basically, you'd need the leader kit I received and a workbook for each participating parent.

The cost of the Leader's DVD Kit is $99.95. The workbooks are $10.95 each. There's also a small group DVD kit available (3 DVD's, 6 workbooks and 1 leader's guide) for $157.70. If you were to get a group of 6 together and divided the cost of the materials, it would work out to about $26 each. $26. I believe this program is totally worth it.

I have to tell you, I'm actually relieved that I made it through the minefield of raising my two daughters and they are now grown, happily married and living successful lives. I'm not sure I'd want to start over in today's world but if I did, I know for sure this course would be a tremendous help.

The only thing I'm receiving for doing this review is the DVD kit itself but I consider that a huge blessing. After all, my daughters are just now beginning the adventure of raising children in this crazy world and you can bet I'm sharing this wonderful program with them.

Thanks for the review. We are looking at different resources to use even though it will be a 1-2 year wait before we see our LynnMarie from China!

Thanks for the info on this. This is something that I would love to see more about. The cost is a bit prohibitive on my own, but with a group it would certainly be reasonable. Now I'm going to go read up some on Chip Ingram!

Thanks for sharing the info. It does sound great for a small group study. We parents need all the help and encouragement we can get.

I've never heard of Chip before but is certainly sounds like a great study. One I could have used about 20 years ago.

I like the sound of this program, like you said for personal use and for church groups:)

Barb, It is really great that they chose you to tell others about this. We don't have to look far to see that raising kids today is much more difficult, even more dangerous for them (think Columbine) than it was when you were little.

This defective world would have us renounce our faith, and when we clearly live by it, those who don't are very bothered by our not being like them. Thank goodness someone came up with a training program to help parents, and oppose the status quo.

We bought that book, Effective Parenting, right before we moved here and I've not read it all yet, but so far I like it. I didn't know there was study involved, etc. We highly respect Chip Ingram, listened to him every day in Dallas on 90.9 KCBI.

This presentation sounds intelligent, enlightening and useful. And it sounds like something my church should buy... Thanks for your review.

Shalee had a great idea - if a church could buy the leader's kit and then individuals can go from there forming groups to do the study and just have to purchase their own book. Thanks for the review!

Hi Barb,

Nice to "meet" you! You stopped by my site yesterday and perused my current book options. Great minds think alike because the book you are interested in is the one that keeps me up at night!

I've enjoyed your site and look forward to getting to know you better. :)
