I can imagine what you're thinking. I made this book over ten years ago and I use it all the time. My last name is on the front so please pardon the little brown swatch. I chose to call it Good Things because, well, we all have our heroes. ;-)
I have this OCD thing about throwing magazines out before I've read them front to back at least six times and clipped every single good idea I've found in them. If I threw these clippings into a drawer or a big envelope, I'd never look at them again.
So I bought an inexpensive photo album at Walmart, removed the magnetic photo pages (which you should never use on photos because they're not acid-free and eventually your photos will deteriorate - a hundred years from now, but still) and I replaced them with equally inexpensive clear sheet protectors. I use plain white printer paper to glue these fabulous little finds of mine to and slide those into the protectors.
I use this book all the time. It's full of all kinds of interesting, useful and fun ideas. You may think that's a little over the top. Except you,
Laura. I know you don't think it's over the top. It's an excellent way to organize my clippings in such a way that I'll actually refer to and use them.
And I get kind of a kick out of imagining my daughters going through this someday when I'm no longer here. I can just hear them saying, "So THAT'S where she got that idea!" For now they just think Mom comes up with the most amazing ideas. :-)
Just look at the fascinating things you'll find in my "Good Things" book:
Here's an article on what kind of spray paint to use on almost anything
from metal to plastic to wood to wicker.
If I ever decide to spray paint something, I'm all set.
This page showed me how to freeze ripe bananas and use them later in coolers and slushies. And that clipping at the bottom tells me how to clean cast ironware with a coarse salt scrub which will not mess up its seasoning.
This is the guest room I dream of having some day. This is exactly how I'd want it to look, sloping ceiling and all. You know. When I convert the attic into an amazing guest room.
I knew when I saw the Chris Madden spa collection bathroom linens (Penny's)
I wanted them. And guess what? I have them now.
There's a recipe for a raspberry cheesecake shake on this page. Yeah. Cheesecake. If I were rich, I'd own about a dozen of those wonderful Adirondack chairs from L.L.Bean. I love that arrangement of botanical prints. And Martha Stewart's instructions for "turning strawberries into a juicy compote that's delicious spooned over ice cream or cake" is on this page. It's called macerating strawberries.
I didn't know that. But I do it all the time now.
Well, for heavens sake. Here's the BLT pasta I made for dinner last night.
I have no idea how that photo got in there.
Here's a chart of all the pieces available in my Pfaltzgraff pattern (Cappuccino).
And there's an article on forcing pretty spring bulbs indoors.
If I ever get my hands on some gigantic seashells, I'm going to do this.
I love these used as planters for small green plants.
Did you know the maximum shelf life of Windex is two years? Same thing for a tube of lipstick. Regular Coke in a can will last for nine months. Diet Coke is only good for three months but I know it doesn't last that long around those of you who are addicted to it. (Sarah) This is a "use it or lose it" chart. It tells me the shelf life of everything from honey (forever) to dried pasta (twelve months) to a fire extinguisher (service or replace every six years).
Oh! And hair gel only lasts two to three years.
The next time I can afford new living room furniture, I'm going to remember that I'm going for a minimalist look, NOT flowers, for petes sake.
One of the cleverest things I've ever come across is using lifesavers as birthday candle holders on kids' cakes. And I'd jump through a ring of fire for that sweet cottage style bathroom.
Maybe I'll do that when I remodel the attic.
If you've been inside a Walmart in the last six years, you've probably seen Paula Deen on those overhead TV's showing you how to put water in votif candles to prevent a waxy mess when they melt. But I saw it first in this clipping a long time ago. And I never would have thought to drill drain holes in my trash cans to make washing them out a lot easier.
I have no earthly idea why I've yet to make these oatmeal cream pies.
I think I'll pull this page out and set it on my kitchen counter.
This is just downright fun - using traditional lollipops as cocktail stirrers, in colors and flavors that compliment them. Imagine a lime lollipop in a gin and tonic.
Or! A strawberry lollipop in a frozen margarita. Fun!
Let's go back to those macerated strawberries for a moment. It's strawberry season and I love to do all kinds of things with them. We're really fond of strawberry shortcake at Casa del Rob and Barb. So try this. Hull and slice a couple of cups of strawberries, then mix in two tablespoons each sugar and lemon juice. Cover and let "macerate" (code for stand and soften) at room temperature, for an hour. Now you have the perfect strawberries for strawberry shortcake
or a wonderful topping for ice cream.
And if you love strawberries as much as I do, you can buy boocoodles of them and macerate them because they freeze beautifully in airtight containers for up to three months.
And really, I never had the slighest intention of doing a post like this. But I was reading People Magazine last night and saw this. Is this not strange? But you know, the whole concept is oddly appealing to me. Kind of tickles my pickle fancy. Seriously, I'm brave enough to try strawberry dill pickles. So I clipped this out of the magazine. Which led me to my Good Things book. Which got me to thinking.
There really are some very unique ideas in my little book.
So I decided what the heck. I can post about anything at all and sharing my book, why I made it and how I use it just sounded like a good thing to me.

Would you PLEASE post the recipe for your BLT pasta? it looks great. I make a BLT salad w/ homemade dressing my family loves, and this pasta looks like something they would like too. of course anything with bacon in it has to be good and good for you!
thanks
Hello Anonymous,
You can link to the recipe for the BLT pasta in my Sunday Meandering post under "Sunday Dinner." :-)
How'd you get so organized...and I thought I was doing good today just getting my bathroom cleaned.
Thanks for posting this! There are so many great ideas in that book, and it's much better than a bunch of old magazines sitting around with you wondering where that article on "such and such" was! I'm so glad you shared.
Oh.My.Word. We must be long lost sisters! I thought I was the only one OCD enough to have a book like that. Infact, mine got so big with all the recipes, I have 2. I use it all the time. I used to save every magazine I ever had because I "might" need it again and then on one of those organizational shows they showed a book like this so I adopeted it. I've only had mine for about 6 years, so you started it :)
i totally do this too, except yours seems to have a lot more interesting stuff in it than mine.
I also do this for recipe clippings.
Blessings,
Karla
Now, that's impressive. I have every issue of Home Companion that I've ever received, plus a couple dozen other magazines that I can't bear to part with. I really should do this. Great idea!
WOW! What a great idea! I've never thought about doing something like this, but my hubby would love for me to get rid of all my magazines and clippings all over the place. I'm going to Wal-Mart and getting the stuff! BTW, I would never eat a kool-aid pickle! Yuck!
I don't believe it! I don't believe it! I actually make something from your book - the oatmeal cookies. Let me tell you they are delicious and very easy. You have to try them!
that is such a great idea. I'm always stuffing them in a drawer and then never looking at them again. Pulling out that notebook would be as fun to look through as a photo album!
Great idea about the page protectors.
Love your blog! I made the Oriental spinach salad. I loved it, but Hubby, sadly, did not. "It was OK." Oh, well. Maybe he'll like the pasta BLT. That looks good.
This would have made a great WFMW, but I'm glad you didn't wait that long, especially since there's not one this week due to the 4th.
I have some magazine pages I've pulled out and put in file folders, but I think this is a better idea -- much more visible and appealing.
Thanks for sharing! I love many of these ideas, especially the life savers as candle holders! You can have any and all pickles, though. :-)
That is a GREAT idea...I just love it!
I love this idea! I am a huge packrat - have given up cutting things out of magazines because I lose them or never look at them again. I'm going to have to try it myself...thanks for sharing.
I've been reading your blog for some time now - really enjoy it.
Have a blessed day.
edith
Well now I know who to call when I need to know if I need to throw out that jar of 2 years eye pads that are sitting in my fridge.
This is such a cool idea. I'm infamous for ripping things out of magazines and then a year later throwing them out because I can't stand all the loose ripped papers.
Barb, you are right, this is fantastic!! Love it, love it, love it!!
You have all the essentials there plus it's an inspirational book as well!
I'm so loving the lollipop thing as stir sticks. How fun is that!
Thanks for the organizational fix, I sure needed it...you are the greatest!!!
Laura
Oh my goodness! This makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Seriously. Things like this excite me to no end. I can not believe what a brilliant idea this is! I hope you do not mind but I must start my own "Good Things" book. Wow. Thank you for this!!
Barb, you are my hero. I love this idea! Don't be surprised if a strange man walks up to you one day and hugs the stuffin' out of you. That would be my husband thanking your for motivating me to clip the articles I want to keep and throw out the mags!
Seriously, I dont even want to tell you how I store "good things", except it has to do with files, pieces of paper smushed in them, labeled "not sorted".....we are sisters, blood related, right?
There are some seriously great ideas in these pages. I like the votive candle one especially.
That is so great! I have clippings in a file but they tend to never get looked at. I bet if I put them in something like that I'd actually use them.
Thanks for the breakfast recipes ! I'm going to try them both soon.
And I think I'll make that pasta tomorrow - it looks soooo good!!
Barb, I do the very same thing! Except my clippings are not quite so organized...more like scattered here and there....and I read an article and think, "I've got to remember that!"...only most of them are forgotten about 3 minutes after I finish reading the article.
Oh...I guess what I do is NOTHING at all like your handy system. ;D
This is a great idea for those who are disciplined enough or OCD enough to actually put it into practice. :-)
First day with Emmy is done. So far so good. I'm tired, but it's a good tired. :-)
Love and hugs,
Diane
I do this same thing. I have one binder full of recipes that I've cut out over the years and another one filled with decorating tips, rooms I like, holiday decorations and party ideas. I feel so Martha-ish knowing that you do the same thing.
Do tell us if you try those pickles! : )
I LOVE this! I did the same thing with my recipes but have no idea why I never thought of it for clippins from magazines...I've been going through mine saving clipped things & they're in a folder but this would be so much better; great idea!
And the last pic, of the kool-aid pickles & it says it's popular in the Mississippi delta, I live in the MS Delta and I don't think I've heard of this before! Interesting.
I so want to make those pickles too! It's strange... I have an idea... you make them and then tell me if they are good. My doctor (and church friend) makes jalepenos by draining the liquid, cooking vinagar with a lot of sugar and repeating the process several times. He swears they are the secret to many of his famous recipes, including his chili that won the church contest this past new years. I'm going to verify his recipe, make them and then maybe post about it sometime.
Barb,
I do this too! Like Big Mama, I've got 2 books. Well, I should clarify & say I've bought the binders, protectors, etc. Haven't actually gotten it all organized yet. BUT, I cleaned out my fridge tonight...so that counts for something, right? ;D
I think this is my favorite post of yours to date. It seriously speaks to a part of me that YEARNS for organization and I had to wipe the drool off my computer screen not once but twice while I read!!
I am soooo doing this book for myself. I am on a quest to de-clutter my house somewhat. And there are things I just can't seem to throw away. My husband says to scan it all in the computer. I need something I can touch and see and build upon.
Thanks for the great idea.
Now, I'm not sure about the pickles. I'm willing to try them. They remind me of the sweet garlic pickles that are popular in Mississippi. The make THE best tuna salad! Yummmm!
Love your dream book, Barb. I do something similar, but I've used a blank art book and pasted the things on there. I lifted the idea from Sarah Ban Breathnach from her Simple Abundance book. She calls it a discovery journal, but I like to call it my dream book.
It's so fun to learn that I'm not the only information fanatic out here. I have stacks of magazines that I want to still go through because I don't want to throw any bits of precious information away!
Thanks, Barb.
Very smart idea! I clip articles sometimes and then forget where I put it.
Hugs,
Kat
You had me 'til Koolickles ;-)
Barb, I love this idea! I clip things out of my magazines all the time but they end up in scattered piles throughout my house. :)
Okay, as for your BLT pasta recipe, will you link up on my Favorite Ingredients Friday recipe exchange this week so more people will see this? :)
what an excellent and interesting book
and BTW I like the look of your dinner last night :)
I may be giving this too much thought, but... do you think you add actual "pickles" to the KoolAid or pickling cucumbers.
If it's pickles, it might work for those stupid low pressure moments when I have to choke down a dill.
Hmmm...
Hi, I'm de-lurking here. I've read your blog for a while now. Found it through Sarah's of course. I do this same thing, I have a 3 ring binder of good ideas and decorating things, etc.
Also, love the recipes you put on here. I'm going to try the blueberry breakfast thing- except I will have to make my own buttermilk buiscuits (gasp!). Can't get those over here!
Thanks!
Many years ago (pre children) I would cut out pics, ideas and recipes from my piles of magazines. I bought a lovely flowery folder and popped them in there. I still have it, in the attic.
Must dig it out!
Oh Barb, I love, love, LOVE this post.
I have a couple of flipfiles - do you know what those are in the US? for each category. And a great ideas list - that's mainly for business.
Which reminds me, I have about 6 magazines to go through.
I love the guest bedroom, the bathroom and especially the stirrer sticks. That is an awesome idea!
Organising Queen blog and
Take Charge blog
Hey Barb,
I posted wedding time travel to day, for you!
You never cease to amaze me with your innovative and creative ideas. I've got to start a book like this too! Thanks for the idea. It's great!
Barb,
I *love* this post!! Your Good Things book is the neatest idea. I love clipping things here and there out of magazines, but I have yet to find a way to keep them organized. What an awesome idea!! Thanks so much for sharing!!
I really enjoyed this post; your book is a very good idea. The BLT pasta looks wonderful, and I need to look for a "use it or lose it" chart like that. The pickles, however, are all yours!
This really is a fantastic idea. I'm forever clipping things, shoving them in a drawer or basket, forgetting about them, and eventually throwing them away. Love this method of saving them!
Fabulous idea for staying organized! I have lots of good idea clippings too..but mine are in a drawer somewhere...never to see the light of day probably. You album is a great idea!
I make that "monkey bread" only clal it pluck-it and put it in a bundt pan, and no fruit. I"ll have to try yours.
My word, Barb, you need to stay an extra week over here and organize the kazillion things I've cut out of magazines over the years! They're stacked in my "junk" cupboard and I never use any of them! I don't know how many exercise ideas I've cut out over the years!! HA.
P.S. HMMM. Kool-Aid dill pickles. I'll have to depend on you to try that one for me.
Oh, Barb, maybe there's hope for me yet! I do this too! Just need to be a tad tidier about putting the pages in the sheet protectors though.
Honestly, I thought the one photo was the Periodic Chart of the Elements (or something like that).
Can you believe how many comments you've generated on this? You need your own HGTV show!!!
what a great idea you have given to us,I just love the lifesavers for candles and never would have thought about drilling holes in the trash cans and would love to bake the oatmeal cookies.thanks again Barb you have really wonderful tips have an awesome day (hugs from the Island):0)
love it love it love it Barb! your a genius!
I love your notebook idea. You are just so creative! I think I will try to do the same thing. I could even make a notebook for each topic. One for weddings, one for crafts, one for decorating, etc.
Thanks Barb, for a great idea!
Barb, I love you. Couldn't you just adopt me so I could be family too? Just teasing. But I so wish I could really meet you. I look forward to reading your blog each day.
I love your book! I scanned my magazine clippings...but it hasn't done any good since I never look at them!
I've done something similar to your book with recipes. I use a 4x6 photo album and slide recipe cards into the slots. My favorite ones stay in the album and since the page is plastic, splatters wipe off easily. It's also a great bridal shower gift.
By the way, I'm with ya on the new couches! I am so sorry I bought flowered couches. I promise to never ever do it again!
I can tell you are a "Real Simple" reader. Me too - probably my favorite magazine!
I started a book like this about 10 years, when we were going to start building our house. Everytime I would see something I wanted to incorporate in our home, or accessorize with, etc. I would put it in that book. I still have that book, still add to it. I didn't necessarily get everything I was hoping for but.....I'm hopeful.
What a neat idea!
Barb, I love this idea and have contemplated doing one of these for years. I collect magazines and love to pour over them again and again but I am getting quite out of room. This looks like I project I may have to add to my list.
Yours looks great and lots of great ideas too. Thanks for sharing.
Maybe I'm just tired but I am howling at your reply "Hello Anonymous."
I have something similar for my everything design related that I like because I don't like to keep magazine around but I don't have one with great tips. Fantastic idea!
Love the garbage can tip and the lifesavers!
Happy 4th! :)
You know, this will also serve as a really neat sort of historical document. Your grandchildren will love it. And it may end up in a museum somewhere!
Oh, BARB, I LOVE YOUR BLT PASTA!!!! I know I've said it before, but that picture made me have a moment. A brief salivary moment of delightful memory of your lovely pasta. And... if you try the koolickles, I know i would, too. I'm sort of a disciple, now. :P
Your book truly is a "good thing".
I've wanted to do this for years. I really need to do it. So why don't I? I don't know but thanks for the reminder . . . perhaps a good 4th of July project? :)
I didnt have time to post anything yesterday when I read this. .......my mom and I have been looking it over she loves the lollipop in gin look...very cute...thanks for sharing and she also tried your muffins....yummy, thanks gal for always sharing
Well, I have the greatest of intentions of doing a book like this for pages I rip out of magazines, as well as recipes I've ripped out of many places. Yet, mine still sit in folders and piles and hiding places. I'm in awe, really, of your book and how organized and pretty it is!
P.S. I had to scroll up and look for my sister Gail's comments. We both live in MS and she lives in the Delta region. I know that I've never heard of these pickles and I was relieved to hear that she had not either. They must have attributed that to our part of the country by mistake, LOL!
Two things: I can't imagine the pickles being good, and I can't believe you've had the blog this long, and you are just now sharing this book with us! You've been holding out! What a great idea. I have so many clippings scattered throughout the house, stuffed in drawers. Duh.
I came back to look at this post again! It's so inspiring! lol
Skipping the 840 comments before me . . .
Aunt Barb, this is my all-time favorite post of yours! I love this idea! I'm going to have to copy this one!!
Okay, here's what I love:
That guest bedroom? Forget the guests, I want it for myself.
We've drilled holes in our trash cans already. Check.
Diet Coke doesn't last more than two weeks here, so we're safe.
I macerated strawberries this week for ice cream but ate several before they made it into the ice cream--delicious!
I'll be needing that recipe for the raspberry cheesecake shake, please!
And when you're emailing the recipe, could you pretty please give me the tip on the salt scrub for cast ironware? Please?
Fantastic post :) Fantastic OCD tendencies! Love you!!
Isn't if fun to find ideas for your home and dream about them. The only room that I have done the way I like is our living room. Still working on ideas for the rest of the house :)
Guess I will be making your BLT salad for dinner tonight - it is perfect for this kind of weather :)
Be blessed today and always.
If anyone is short of ideas, they need only visit Barb!! I love your idea of putting the pages in a book form. When we were building our house, I saved magazine articles for different things, but didn't put them in a folder. Now, I wish I had! Thanks for the idea! This is a type of scrapbook.
Fabulous post! Would love to see a larger link to the chart with the expiration dates for all the items :)
I loved this post, and your funny comments in between pages!
I have that oatmeal cookie pie thing article tucked away too., mine is stuffed in a plain 3-ring binder, in a side pocket cuz I'm too lazy to punch holes in the pages and put it together...not as classy as your little album there...
thanks for sharing!
I love this! I thought I was the only one! I have a binder for reciepes, craft ideas, and home idea. Love them!!
I have one of these 3 ring binders too!! LOL My husband was just laughing at it last night shaking his head saying, you and all your binders for different things! :)
What a wonderful idea. I currently have a HUGE stack of magazines because I wanted a page or two to keep and with a new baby in the house the less mess is a GOOD THING!
Thank you!
What a neat idea you have! I don't have any subscriptions to magazines, but I do get magazines off the rack every once in a while!
I love this. I have all mine in a file box, but this is SO much better. I have always thought about doing this but never got around to buying the page protectors, lol. I have that same pull out about the Windex shelf life!!!
I enjoyed this post (my first time at your blog). I got some really good ideas just looking at the pages- the lifesaver/candle idea rocks!! I've been doing this for miscellaneous recipes I find here and there, but this is great!
Will ya' stop with the foodie photos! I'm DYIN' here!
I think you should design some of these handy-dandy books and start your own line of products just down the aisle from Martha. :)
Wonderful stuff!
ok--where's the recipe for that fabulous looking pasta!! Your blog is a "Good Thing"--esp for folks like me who are "Martha-challenged"
I saw that Koolickles recipe and was not impressed! I wonder how they taste? Anyway, I'm over from Organizing Junkie's place and loving your Good Things book. Thanks!
i'm so making one of these this weekend. i've been meaning to for the longest time (since i can't throw out all the goodness that Real Simple has within it's pages...but i can't keep storing my year's subscription).
thanks for the amazing reminder, and a glimse of how great a book like this can be!
oh, and you should try using Air Plants in those huge shells...since they don't need water or soil. i think it would be a great combo :)
Wonderful ideas!!! I'm going to get started ASAP!!!
Thanks for sharing!!!
(I emailed as well)

aka Useless_Rambler
What an AWESOME idea!!!!
I have pages of decorating ideas and whatnot I've torn out of magazines. But they are all stuck in a folder in my file drawer not being used.
Oh-and I'm off to check if you've posted the BLT pasta recipe, looks yummy!
I'm here off the the giveaway blog, because I had to know what this "good things" notebook was all about. GOSH, are you inspiring! So neat and tidy. And what a clever idea on those lollipop cocktail stirrers.
Let me head on back to win this! :)
I would love to do this! This would be right up my alley. Only what I have clipped so far is nowhere near organized. Thanks for the chance to win this! Please count me in!
Well Barb, You are so popular and clever....You can take on the whole blogging world. I love your neat things and ideas. You are truly a Susie Homemaker !!!
Enter me for the drawing. Baba
Barb, I LOVE the Good Things Book! I have had intentions of doing something like this forever....but it would take more than one book for me. I would have to have several different types of books because I have pages and pages of things I've saved from magazines! Recipes, tips, decorating, crafts! Well, you get the picture. Sounds like a goal for 2008, don't you think?
Have I told you, I just love your blog?!
I found you on orgjunkie.com. I have a binder like this that I started probably 2 years ago, and I thought I invented the idea LOL! I have mine for decorating ideas, categorized by general topics such as kitchen, living room, office, accessories, furniture, master bedroom, linens, the girls' room, DS's room, etc.
