Uh oh

Anyone want to guess what that roly-poly's chances are? (Click on the photo - you can actually see the roly-poly then.)

And I have a question. Do birds eat roly-polies? Cause my yard is crawling with them and there are constantly a gazillion birds walking around back there, pecking away at my grass.

Poor things. Between Cameron and the birds, I don't think they stand a chance.

And I have another question. Does anyone know how to spell roly-poly? 'Cause I looked it up and found roly-poly with this definition: short and plump - pudgy. Somehow I don't think Webster is talking about the bug.

Yeah, I know. I'm reaching. But hey! It's not a wedding post and it's not a recipe. Right?

Yes, birds eat roly-poly's and I spell it the same way.

The reason I know birds eat them? Several years ago Jessica and Lamar brought in a baby mourning dove after a storm blew down the nest. I made them leave the baby all day waiting to see if the parents would come back to feed the baby, but they didn't. So Jessica had to find whatever kinds of bugs she could find under rocks, etc. I don't know if Skyler (the dove) liked roly-poly's or not, but he (she?) ate a boat load of them anyway because I crammed them down his gullet with long tweezers, LOL!

We released him successfully and I often wonder when I hear doves cooing and calling if it's him or some of his family.

Cameron is looking at that roly-poly like he's considering whether it's edible or not, LOL! ;D

Love,

Diane

I would certainly think birds and other critters like frogs would eat them?! Hummm... Wasn't there a song from the 60's about a roly-poly man? Webster's is a big vague.

Pillbugs
Occasional Invader, Roly-Poly
Description, Elimination of Pillbugs, Roly-Polys

Pillbugs or roly-poly and sowbugs though similar are different bugs that fall into the pest category of occasional invaders. Sowbugs and pillbugs are crustaceans and are closely related to crayfish and shrimp, more so than to insects.

Often confused with sowbugs, one of the distinct differences between sowbugs and pillbugs is that a Pillbug has the ability to roll its body up into a ball resembling a small pill; a Sowbug does not roll into a ball.

Pillbugs prefer damp areas, which is why they are often found invading homes through openings close to patio doors, laundry rooms and basements. These bugs feed on decaying vegetation most often found in mulched areas around homes. The damp conditions and decaying organic debris are contributing factors for several occasional invaders such as millipedes. Elimination procedures for Pillbugs parallel those for millipedes and sowbugs.

All I know about those cute little guys is that the kids love them. Who can resist a bug that curls into a little ball? We also call them Doodle bugs. That should settle the spelling question!!

The bath sounds heavenly... not gonna happen anytime soon though.
That little guy just gets cuter everyday!

Yeah, they're also called pillbugs. And remember? They're crustaceans, so give the kid some melted butter and a pair of tweezers*!

When I enlarged the picture I noticed his adorable cute "roly-poly" hands... How Sweet!

Sorry I don't have an answer to any of your questions... just wanted to say "hey" and let you know I am still around... like it or not! ;-)

How funny! I actually just posted pics of my daughter doing the same thing. Must be the time of year!

Care Bear plays with them all day long (not the same one, though, because I don't think they can survive that much action!). She just loves them - makes up stories, talks to them. Feisty will have NOTHING to do with anything that flies or crawls. Even butterflies scare her right now.

I need to catch a picture.
