THE BLOG MEME

Barbara at Stray Thoughts tagged me for this early last week.

  1. Do you like the look and content of your blog?

I really like the look of it. I love to change things around and redecorate but Susie did such a great job with the whole look, I know I'll probably never change it. I'm sure it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's definitely mine.

I'm finally OK with the content, too. I got off to an awkward start but it was like talking to people I didn't know yet. Now that I'm more comfortable with it all, I think my real personality comes out.

I didn't start this blog because I wanted to journal my day to day life. I didn't start it because I aspire to be a great writer (I tend to make up the rules of writing as I go). So I think it's kind of all over the place. Sometimes serious. Most times, not. Occasionally I do go back and delete a post when I've had time to calm down and get over my whiny self.

Actually, I just spent two days deleting posts. It felt overwhelming, 325 posts in eight months. I thought to myself, no one in the world including me is ever going to go back and read all this stuff so I deleted like crazy (200 posts!) and it feels like I cleaned the house from top to bottom.

  2. Does your family know about your blog?

Since half of my family blogs, too, I'd say yes. Seriously, my whole family knows I have a blog. My father will never see it because he has no use at all for computers. I suspect that my three brothers read it although none of them have ever commented. It could be that they're afraid to enter the world of the sisterhood! :-)

  3. Can you tell your friends about your blog?

    Yes. Of course.

  4. Do you just read the blogs of those who comment on your blog?

This is the question I thought was a little awkward. I do read a few people who never comment on my blog. Honestly, I have no idea if they even read my blog because I did away with site meter ages ago.

I leave comments on almost all the blogs I follow. There are a few I read but don't comment on. It's awkward for me because when I first started reading them, I did leave comments. They never responded. So those are the blogs I have in my "watch" category in bloglines. I check in occasionally to see what's going on because I think they're interesting. But I don't comment because it's embarrassing to keep leaving comments that go unacknowledged.

Let me also say this. I've probably been guilty of this myself but never intentionally. It's hard to stay on top of it when your life is hectic and a little out of control. But when a new visitor comments, I go find them and thank them. I feel bad right now because there were some new visitors during the whole delurking thing last week and I deleted the post they commented on in my house cleaning frenzy. The minute I deleted it I realized what I'd done. Now I don't know how to find them. (Y'all come back - I promise not to delete you again. :-)

To put it all in the proper perspective, I follow 130 blogs. Four of those are in my "watch" category. I do comment on the other 126.

  5. Does your blog positively affect your mind?

Yes, because I enjoy it. But the blogs I follow have a more positive affect on me.

  6. What does the number of visitors to your blog mean?

The visitors themselves, each one of them, mean a lot to me. The number of visitors doesn't mean anything at all. I don't care about numbers.

  7. Do you imagine what other bloggers look like?

Yes, I do. But I never get it right. For the longest time I pictured Jules as a very tall, waifish, platinum blond. She's not all that tall and she's very brunette. And of course I thought Susanne was a goofy looking girl with a very large head. Wrong again. Her head size is perfectly normal. And I thought Big Mama was, well, you know, large. And she's not. I never get it right. I will say that I picture Boo Mama laying in the yard with her legs up in the air and the wind knocked out of her (based on her profile photo and all). And in this case, I may be right. :-)

  8. Do you think blogging has any real benefit?

Absolutely. Bloggers are real people who care about each other. We support and encourage each other, we're a force to be reckoned with when we join together in prayer for a sister or her loved one. There's no limit to what we can do. We all saw it in action this week when we came out in huge numbers to help our friend, Kelli.

  9. Do you think that the blogosphere is a stand alone community separated from the real world?

I think it might be for some people. But it's not for me. I talk to blogging friends on the phone, we exchange things in the mail, we know we'll eventually meet each other in real life. We email each other encouragement and advice and even recipes behind the blogging scene. The blogging world is just an extension of my real world, an enhancement to it.

  10. Do some political blogs scare you? Do you avoid them?

Political blogs (or posts) don't scare me at all but yes, I do avoid them. I'm not out here to argue with anyone. And I'm really not interested in discussing politics in this forum.

  11. Do you think criticizing your blog is useful?

I think that criticizing anyone's blog is rude. As far as I know, no one's criticized my blog. But if someone did it would be exactly the same thing as walking into my home and telling me they hate my whole decorating scheme, my dinner smells awful, my dog needs a bath and they don't particularly like me either.

I'm not saying I don't think it's OK to disagree with someone but I think there's a nice way to do that without being downright critical or hurtful. Why would anyone do that? It's mean. If you don't like someone's blog, who on earth is making you visit it!

I just don't understand why anyone would leave a criticism or worse, a downright nasty remark, in anyone's comments.

  12. Have you ever thought what would happen to your blog if you died?

Being a little OCD, of course I have. Rob has my username and password. My sister has it, too (in case Rob and I croak together). I've suggested they post my death notice, give everyone plenty of time to run back and print the recipes they want and then kiss it all goodbye. Hit "delete."

My blog is not a journal. So I don't know that there would be any reason to leave it out here.

  13. Which blogger has had the greatest impression on you?

There is no way I could ever choose one blogger who's made a great impression on me. There are just way too many. That's why I simply cannot pare my blogline feeds down to something a little more sane. Heck. I can't seem to stop adding new people to my feeds because I'm addicted to nice people.

  14. Which blogger do you think is the most similar to you?

There isn't one. I have a uniqueness all my own. :-) Is that a huge sigh of relief I hear out there? What. You don't want to be exactly like me?

  15. Name a song you want to listen to.

Truly this question baffles me because I cannot for the life of me figure out what it has to do with blogging. So to answer this in a way that sort of connects it to blogging, I'd say it's You Are Loved by Josh Groban. You know. The song you're hearing right now.

  16. Instead of tagging anyone, I'll open this up to anyone who'd like to do it. There are several of you whose answers I'd really be interested in reading. But I don't want to put pressure on someone who might prefer not to answer some of these questions. I'm a real wimp that way. No guts. No guts at all. :-)

Thanks so much for "playing," Barb. :) I appreciate your thoughtful and heartfelt answers.

I was puzzled by the last questions, too -- it didn't seem to fit in with the rest of them unless the person who started this meant something like name a song you want to listen to on your blog or someone else's.

Deleting 200 posts! :-O I don't know if I could ever do that, though, as you say, probably no one is going to go back and read them. Although, on Wordpress, where I have my blog, there is a place to see what posts have been clicked on, and I am surprised that people find some of my old ones -- maybe through some kind of search.

It was good to hear from you! I've missed your posts this week.

Well, I can honestly say that I LOVE your blog and need to read it everyday. You have been SO kind to visit mine, to comment, and most of all, to give me encouragement when needed.

Thank You!!

I think your answers are so sensible and right. You have this whole thing in proper perspective. I enjoy your blog so much Barb. You are special to me because you have been so kind from the very beginning. Your blog reflects that in every way.
P.S. My new design from Susie is just about ready. I'm so excited.
P.P.S. If we want to participate in the party, can we just put the button in one post or must we put it on the sidebar. I'm, as usual, scared to do anything different!!

I like your answers and obviously, I like your blog. I keep coming every day.

I think I'll do this meme, but it'll be next week sometime. I'll let you know when it's up.

Wow! I can't imagine deleting 200 blogs. Even just thinking about that makes me TIRED!!!!!!!

Have blessed day!

Renee

Wow housecleaning your blog. I never would have thought of that.

And yes, my head is very normal sized but I wish I had the body of that smiley girl!

And I love your blog. My day is missing a little something when you don't post. No pressure or anything.

Anonymous said...

I like your blog because it has gone from a "blog" to a real person. I know that sounds weird and it's hard to explain. You are so open about your family and life, that I can really imagine coming over for tea and playing with Chelsea and Cameron.

Tammy said...

Wow, what an insightful meme!
I love your comment..."I'm addicted to nice people". That does describe you, Barb...and I'd like to think me, too. It's hard not to keep adding blogs to my list all the time...but then I get behind and cannot never catch up!

Which reminds me...you haven't visited me in a few days. What's up with that? (Just kidding...hehe)

Anyway, you know I love your blog and yours is one where I really do see the person behind it's true personality coming out...I've said it before and I'll say it again: It's like sitting with you having coffee.

Now one of these days we're going to have to have that bloggy phone chat! :)

Pamela said...

Enjoyed you meme and all your answers were sweet. I had to laugh over your hubby and sister having the password and that we would be given a chance to copy any of the recipes. lol Silly you! lol

It is so incredible how uplifting and encouraging everyone is out here in bloggityville. Love Josh Groban! :)

Hello Barb,
This was fun to read, I have had this one for awhile and haven't finished it yet.
LOL I thought that was what Boomama looked like to laying on the ground with her feet up in the air but found out from somewhere that was her little boy!! Then she posted a pic of her with alex not to long ago, so that was cool. She looks totally different than I expected.
I loved your post and all your answers.
I hope you didn't delete recipes I was still collecting yours!

You know what is really wild? I dreamed last night that you had come to some sort of ladies' meeting here, and I was introducing you to two of my friends who blog and thinking "Wow! I can't believe she flew in from Colorado!" I had my green clipboard showing you my notes for the Greek mythology class I started teaching today. I think once I dreamed Brenda was here playing Monopoly with us. It is weird to think we're all so connected in spite of never having met!

I'm so glad you blog. I never miss a day of your posts. It's like a visit with a sweet, warm friend (who also happens to cook stuff I would love to eat!)

For the sake of time -you know, my life! - I only let myself read a few blogs. I go off of that plan sometimes, when I find something interesting from the comments, but I usually try to stick to just a few--and you are always in that list! (Speaking of, I am absolutely amazed that you can read so many. I feel like a slug! It takes me an hour -at least - to read and reply to the very few I follow. Are you a speed reader? Tell me how! There really are a few other blogs I would like to add to my daily reading, but sheesh, I already feel like take too long and neglect stuff like, you know, living in real time!)

I just put up a lengthy post, but I might have to do this meme Friday or Saturday. Maybe.

Man, I can't imagine deleting a bunch of posts! It's not like my writing is Nobel material or anything like that, but for some reason I get a little queasy just thinking about deleting any part of my blog.

And I think I'm going to write down my blog address, user name and password, just in case of sickness, death, plague or fire. You never know...

Have a great Friday and weekend, Barb! :-)

I loved your answers, Barb. I can't believe that you deleted 200 posts, it makes me start to itch even thinking about it.

I love reading what you have to say, it's always like catching up with a good friend.

You had some really great answers. You basically summed it all up. I really enjoy your blog and I love the way it looks. I also think you have a real knack for writing. I thought #12 was something I really could identify with. I am not really writing a journal, but I still can't seem to bring myself to delete anything. I am one of those people who get emotionally attached to things, even my blog posts.I wish I could go ahead and clean my blog out.

your answers to this are so good and honest.

I hope you and Rob are doing well. I've been praying for his recovery.

Barb - I tried to leave you a comment last night, but it was not working for me. I just wanted you to know I mentioned you in my blog post of top favs. Thanks for sharing!

Anonymous said...

I more than likely won't participate in this but I have enjoyed reading the blogs of those that did. I really like your opinion about #6...about the commenting..I admire you that you are able to reply back to the many people that comment on your blog...it reflects your kind heart and your thoughtfulness..even if someone comments just one time on my blog, I love to respond and check their place out..it's just the neighborly thing to do..I do read a few that comment back periodically and I am okay with that..I understand their busy lives..and many of them have many many readers, such as you...that's why I think it is terrific that you take the time to "meet" your readers.

Thanks Barb!! I'll copy and print this out to put up on my page Monday morning. It is nice getting to know you a bit better through stuff like this ;)! Have a blessed weekend. Eileen @ http://halfwayhome.wordpress.com

Great answers! I found this such a HARD meme to do, because I don't think about blogging very much - although I blog all the time. I like the looks of your blog very much - you're definitely one of a kind! (and I mean that in the very best way.)

Anonymous said...

Hi Barb,

I just wanted to comment on your response to the look of your blog. I find the look extremely peaceful and calming. The effect is that it makes your blog a very peaceful place to visit. And I love that you admitted deleting posts. I feel a little embarassed to do so as if I've got something to hide and I'm not letting all my flaw show if I hit delete. Knowing that a more "serious" blogger does so will empower me to clean things up as I see fit. Thanks for being here each day:)

These were hard questions. I might come back and do this next week. It'll be interesting to see the differences between us xoxoox

Barb, you comment on 126 blogs??? You are a machine! Especially since I've been the recipient of your comments and it's never a generic "Great post!".

And I'm not at all surprised that you have thought about what would happen to your blog if you died.

I hate to dissapoint you about Boomama though. That profile pic she has is actually her son playing in the yard. So your impression of her is more like that of a three year old boy. :D

Anonymous said...

Just so you know, Barb, yours is the first blog I go to each day. I don't follow as many as you do, but I love to come here. It is peaceful as I imagine your home is too. You have a gracefulness about you that is comforting! Yes, you are real but a dear friend!

Okay. Confession time. The picture in my profile isn't me. It's Alex.

But trust me: I've tripped and fallen enough in my life that it's well within the realm of possibility that I would be splayed out on the ground.

This was an interesting MEME. I laughed out loud at #11. Can you just IMAGINE somebody coming over to your house and actually saying all of those things?

And good grief, you read A LOT of blogs. Incredible!

Shalee said...

I've learned alot of things on this post:

-You read a great deal more blogs than I could imagine.

-I cannot for the life of me consider deleting any of my posts. I want all the stuff around for my kids. One day they may want to know me better...

-I had better get all those recipes of yours on paper!

-That wasn't BooMama's picture? Now I have to go back to the drawing board with her...

Anonymous said...

I cannot imagine keeping track of 130 blogs!!! There are between 15-20 that I read and I think that is a lot. I actually only started reading yours within this last month (I have read your niece Sara's for months now - that is how I "found" your blog).

I don't always comment because I don't always have something to say or when I read the comments, someone has already said what I was thinking. Maybe this sounds weird but in "real life" I don't talk just for the sake of talking and maybe that spills over into this whole new blogging world that I have ventured into.

Either way, I decided to let you know that I visit your blog and I purposely did not read your comments just in case I am saying something someone else already has!

I love that you are so honest and yet, you do it so gracefully and with such tact.

I enjoyed reading all your well thought out answers! I do the same thing regarding other blogs and commenting. I read several and commented on them, but never seemed to get any response, so I don't bother commenting on anymore. I have a few that I keep in bloglines to follow/read, but I don't link to them on my blog or comment anymore - just not enough time!

gail said...

That was fun to read....well thought out answers.
I think we sort of have to imagine or picture what other bloggers look like. And it was encouraging to see what bloggers came together to do for Kelli this week.

I am so bogged down at work that I don't have any time to do any blogging there (as in, taking a break!), and DC has become a bit disturbed at the amount of time I'm holed up in this room, so I've had to cut back a bit. I'm not sure why it's bothering him!

I have one person who started out as my blog friend, and I continue to comment, but don't hear from her any more. It really makes me wonder why.

Have you seen Kristen's invitation to come over sometime and have a blogger party here on the eastern side??

My next one is my 100th (in 7 months - I am not nearly as prolific as you!), so I am trying to get that together. No time!!

Enjoyed reading your answers. I had to laugh when Josh came through over my speakers. I have him on in the kitchen too this a.m. so I'm getting a double dose! Love his CDs...think I enjoy his older one a bit more than the newest.

Your blog is beautiful.

I will probably do this one. I've had some "blog business" I've needed to post, so I might do so with this.

One of the questions I want to ask "my readers" is this comment thing. . . . I have issues, I think.

No guts? Here, have some of mine. ;)

I like your blog, Barb...but mostly I like you. Fun post. Um...Josh is done singing now, so I guess that's my que to move on...

Hi Barb! I loved reading your answers today. You have a great head on your shoulders about this whole blogging thing. I'm trying to figure it out myself- comments, or no comments, site meter or no site meter. I have made many new friends through blogging, though, so it's a joy for me any way you slice it! Have a great weekend!

Hi Barb,
This was an interesting meme..
I'm beginning to think one's blogging style is a constantly evolving thing and that we should just go with what feels right at the time.
I think you achieve that very nicely all the time. It's always a pleasure to visit, and I'm so glad you're playing this song again :-)

I trust that Rob is recovering well. Y'all are still in my prayers. xoxoxo

I can identify with #7 and #11. I began to talk to people on the internet back in 1991 and wondered what people looked like. My thoughts of them was not always right. I only know of one friend in Ohio that I got right.

As far as people leaving smart comments, it happens all the time. I've really had some bad ones on my blog. But, the worse one came through email about my picture on my website, when I first started. Some young guy wrote that my hairdo was terrible, but that wasn't all he said. I just felt he was attacking me, not my hair. But, I let it go.But, on my blog, I have been known to delete nasty notes! I just don't want them sticking out in public for others to read. Disagree, but don't get nasty.
