Christmas just happens. And it's beautiful, isn't it? We all go a little crazy during this last week, thinking we just don't have our act together this year, and suddenly, Christmas just happens. You know? We mamas are magicians.
My Mandy is home. My wonderful, sweet third-grade-teaching daughter is home. And she's busy! Teachers get paid once a month. Mandy got paid yesterday. Mandy and Aaron just finished the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace course at Fellowship Church last Saturday. So Mandy took me and her new budget plan shopping today. Actually, I'm done and she could have gone without me, but this was a mom and me day. Oh my, we had a wonderful time. Lunch. Lists. Finding every single thing on the lists on the first shot. A wonderful, wonderful day.
And look what I did! My mother was here almost every day this week and I spent those days with her, just enjoying our last few days together. My brother Derrell arrived from Denver today. He's here to move Mom back to the eastern slope. He survived the truly unbelievable blizzard that Denver is just tonight finally digging out of and got out here to help Mom move.Mom and I play Scrabble. A lot. And I don't think she'd mind me telling you she's so determined to beat me
that it takes her 15 to twenty minutes to make a word.
So I made goodies in between my turns. :-)
I'm so tickled that I got my family's favorite Christmas treats made this year. And I even added a new one this year. I know it's going to become a family favorite.
At the top, on the left, is my homemade cracker jacks, Rob's favorite. On the right of it is Big Mama's toffee. OK, I love you to pieces, Big Mama, but we all know this is Gulley's recipe for toffee. My goodness, if Gulley doesn't start her own blog soon, well, it's just a crying shame. She could start with a food blog and go from there. You know? Anyway...
Under Gulley's toffee is my Santa's Whiskers. OK. They're cookies. But you know how when someone brings a Christmas tray to work or church or something and when they take the foil off, it just smells like Christmas? These cookies smell like Christmas. They're wonderful. The only Christmasy smell I've ever loved better is a brand new baby doll. Nothing is better than new baby doll smell but my Santa's Whiskers run a close second.
And to the left of them is my divinity. If I didn't make divinity, my little family would think I was ready for assisted living or something.
If there's one thing I regret, it's that I never took family photos seriously when my kids were little. This is Krissy and Andy's Christmas card this year. I ask you, what on earth was I thinking? My little girls were just this gorgeous and Rob still had hair and I was still young and beautiful and do you think I have a single Christmas photo like this one? Uh, no. So can I just say, I love, love this Christmas card. It goes without saying that my daughter is beautiful. She has always been so beautiful, inside and out, but my word, look at her gorgeous husband, Andy, and my precious grandchild, Cameron. This is "Beautiful Family," personified. (I know I'm a littled biased, but really, are they not an amazingly beautiful little family?)
The light of my life. Cameron. Last Christmas, he was practically a newborn, five months old. This year, he's a little spitfire and I mean that in the nicest way. He's not a brat. This child is truly the most amazingly mellow toddler I've ever encountered in my life, and yeah, if he were the toddler from you know where, I'd probably say that, but still. Krissy and I took him Christmas shopping on Wednesday. We left at 10 o'clock in the morning and didn't get home until after five o'clock in the afternoon. He totally missed his nap. Lunch was French fries dipped in ranch dressing and mostly playing with the big cardboard "car" box that A&W kid meals come in. I think we managed to find one reasonably sanitary place to change his diaper. Most eighteen month old babies would have been a nightmare but Cameron was an angel. All.day.long.I adore this baby.
As mischievous as this baby has been in the last few days, I adore her, too. Rob and I have been married for twenty-eight years. We've always had dogs and cats. All our pets have been a little quirky but truly good pets. Chelsea, hands down, is the most wonderful dog we've ever had. She doesn't have a mean bone in her little eleven pound body. She is love in motion. Lots of motion. But ask anyone, Bev, my Mom, the guy who tries to sell me steaks from the trunk of his jalopy once a month, really anyone. She loves anything with a heartbeat. She doesn't just sleep with me. She crawls under the covers and shoves her little shih tzu behind as close to my heart as she can possibly shove it every night. Oh, how I love this little package of complete, total devotion.
My little family decided years ago that we'd all make "wish lists" to give each other at Christmas. I, for one, do NOT want my kids to spend money on gifts for me that I don't want or need. It works. We give each other lists of all the things we'd love to have but wouldn't buy for ourselves.I had a hard time with that this year. I have magnetic lists, several actually, on my fridge. One's for Sam's and one's for the grocery store and one's for Borders....you know. I Febreze my dog and I have separate pads for each store I shop at. I do.
My Christmas wish list, right there on the fridge for all to see, the one I've been working on for three months, says, "recipe cards, sweater rack and citrus/sage Yankee candles." Seriously, I couldn't think of anything I want.
What I want more than anything at all this year is to see this movie. This is the one movie I cannot wait for Netflix to offer. I.want.to.see.this.movie. And I think I've dropped enough hints, I'll see this movie before the new year. I did make it very clear that this Christmas wish includes the TUB of popcorn and a large Sprite.
:-)
So my brother is here to help my mother move. I've spent every single possible moment with her we both had in the last week and she'll leave on Christmas Day.
We're ready for Christmas Eve. Our family gets together that evening. This year, for the first time ever, no formal sit-down, napkin-in-your-lap dinner. Can we say buffet? And my word, it's going to be wonderful, it saved me probably $100 and I may never do it any other way, it's so stress-free.
So in spite of feeling like I had the hardest time ever getting in the spirit this year, Christmas has arrived and we're ready for it.
By the way, Mandy and I saw the most wonderful thing today. Did you know Fisher Price has a nativity for toddlers? I swear, it's adorable and if we hadn't both already gone over budget shopping for Cameron, he'd be getting that this year. Who knew? He's getting it next year, for sure.
I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do my Sunday post this week. Sunday is the day my family will be here to celebrate. Lots of food to eat, lots of gifts to open, lots of games to play. So my Sunday Meaderings may not happen. Instead, I offer you my very, very late Friday night Meanderings.
To all of you, every single one of the one hundred and twenty-three people I have in my bloglines because you are my friends, I wish you a wonderful Christmas. You have, each and every one of you, blessed me. And I am thankful for you.
Gullery's toffee recipe (EASY) is here.
My recipes for crackerjacks, Santa's Whiskers and divinity are here.

Barb, I'm sitting here bawling and slinging snot. ;D
I am so blessed to be able to call you my friend. You have opened your heart and your home to me and made me feel like I'm a part of your family. This post touched my heart in so many ways.
I pray God's richest blessings on you and yours this Christmas season, and for a happy and joyous New Year.
God Bless You, My Friend. :-)
Diane
Great post Barb! Sounds like you are having a wonderful time with family..have the merriest Christmas! Wonderful pictures as always.
I'm blessed by you, it has been a great pleasure meeting you!
Merry Christmas to you and your family!
What a beautiful post, Barb! Your whole family is just gorgeous!
Merry Christmas!
I just can't believe all the things that you have accomplished during this holiday season. Baking, playing Scrabble, making all different kinds of gifts, etc. What an inspiration you have been to me.
Do you ever wonder why certain things in your life, especially as a child, make such an impression that you remember it forever? Between the ages of 6-8 we lived next door to a sweet elderly lady. I can't tell you her name, nor what she looked like, or anything else for that matter, except I remember her as being a sweet person and the fact that she always made divinity. And when I think I divinity I think of her. Why I have that memory and can't even remember her name, I don't know.
Anyway, your divinity looks divine!
And.that.Christmas.card. Oh my! Seriously, that has got to be the most beautiful card I have ever seen. I love the black and gold design and Cameron is soooo adorable!! I never thought of doing those kind of cards either Barb! My kids do though, and I am thankful for that!
Hoping that you and your lovely family have an amazing Christmas this year. I have no doubt that you will. There is so much love among ya'll and you truly seem to cherish every moment with each other.
Merry Christmas!
How wonderful! You have a beautiful family, Barb! May you have a very blessed Christmas and be surrounded by family, friends, and the love of God. All the best to you and yours!
Paying you a visit over here is such a comfort to my soul. It reassures me that there is much love within many families, that what I imagine a Christmas to be like for a child...truly is possible....that there exists daughters, and moms, and grandmoms that treasure their moments together and pay forward all the blessings that make up their lives. Thanks Barb for taking the time during this busy season for giving me hope that I may be this kind of example for my family...many times I struggle...but I can turn here for encouragement and the hope of such possibilities.May you and all of your family have a blessed Christmas and I pray that your Mom's move goes smoothly. God Bless.
Merry Christmas to you and yours! The Nativity Story is so worth seeing! Very good movie.
Barb, I love reading about everything y'all have going on. It all sounds so fun and full of Christmas cheer. And yes, Cameron and his mama and daddy are just beautiful. His eyes could melt anyone's heart.
Thank you for your friendship, for all your sweet encouragement. I love your heart and I love that you make lists for each store and Febreze your dog.
Merry, merry Christmas to you and your family.
Hi Barb - I wanted to know if you have a chance to email me privately. If you are comfortable giving out your address to me as I have something special I want to send you.
I won't get to it until Wednesday or so anyways, so no big rush.
Merry, merry Christmas!!!
Stacey
Merry Christmas Barb to you and yours. I hope your Mom has a very safe journey and that your holiday is filled with memories and happiness.
I loved reading the late Friday night meanderings. I, for one, will be out of town and unable to use a computer. First, the tray of cookies look so yummy. I am going for the Santa whiskers. I have all the ingredients right now except the coconut. Second, the picture of your daughter and her family is gorgeous! I love how the black background makes them stand out so beautifully. Third, I want to again wish you a very Merry Christmas. Have fun seeing the Nativity. I saw it with the girls yesterday and it was wonderful.
Your tree looks fabulous, Barb. I think the lights are just right. And the Christmas goodies are much too tempting! One thing I want to do with my girls when they get here is to try out some of those recipes.
The only family photos we ever took were for the church directory, and I've always wanted to do one for Christmas cards. Krissy's is absolutely gorgeous. What a beautiful family!
Mandy's gift from her third-graders is a treasure! How creative!
It blesses my heart tremendously that you have such a wonderful relationship with your daughters, and I thank God daily for your inspiration and friendship. I love you dearly.
Merry Christmas to you and your family! xoxoxo
Barb --
you are a precious soul and I am so glad that I stumbled across your blog. It is definitely my breath of fresh air in my daily blogging.
you are so welcoming.
Merry Christmas to you!
Blessings,
Karla
What a wonderful way to begin December 23, almost Christmas, and the start of a whole new year. I love so much, seeing you enjoy this very best holiday. Hardly thinking of yourself, except for wanting to see the Nativity movie.
If anyone knows how to put the real meaning in Christmas, it's you.
Sweet and Precious Barb~
You brought tears to my eyes! I am not exactly sure why - but you did!
I wish you and your precious family a wonderful holiday filled with the GLORY of the LORD!
Merry Christmas sweet Barb!
In HIM,
Renee
P.S. Oh, and that Fisher Price Nativity - absolutely fabulous - Hannah has one and Aspen's is on it's way - if the Postal Service ever decides to deliver here again! ;-)
Thanks for sharing, Barb. That Cameron is a doll baby - those eye, oh my goodness!
I hope and pray you have a Christmas filled with sweet and beautiful memories.
Wonderful, beautiful, and all the other words to describe the many fabulous things in this post!
Merry Christmas to you also my friend!
Love your meanderings and I'm glad you got one in this weekend. Your family is beautiful and how nice you'll all be together tomorrow. And that little Chelsea just has her mommy wrapped around her little paw doesn't she? :vD I love to read about her antics.
Your tree looks great, Barb, and I don't see what you mean about too many lights. It's just gorgeous.
And now you've made it so that I have to try that toffee so I'm off to buy MORE butter and some pecans. I hope mine look anywhere near as good as yours!
Merry Christmas!
Cameron reminds me of one of those little Precious Moments dolls, he truly does. What a terrific post. I woke up feeling stressed with all I have to do and yet, for some reason, read your post and am walking away feeling strangely at peace. Thanks for the wonderful post. I think I may have to try my hand at some of that delicious looking toffee. Yum-o!
K.
Merry Christmas Barb. Thank you so much for the special gift of your friendship. It has been so wonderful getting to know you.
Yes - that is the most beautiful family - in Colorado. I have to vote for my kids and grandkids here in Texas :-) Seriously, I am like you about pictures. We don't have a good one of all of us either. Even now whenever we get together I say we need to take a family picture, and we always get so busy it doesn't happen. One of these days I'd like one with absolutely eveyone in it!!
Have a blessed, wonderful weekend. See you in the new year!!!
You know I love ya!
Be blessed this wekk. Enjoy Rob, Mandy, Krissy and Cameron- and your mom.
This will be a great Christmas since Cameron is just old enought to really get into it- Chelsea should have a run for the money with the wrappings and boxes :)
This will be a year of change and miracles for all of us. I'm praying fervently for Rob's arm and job, Mandy's upcoming wedding and everything.
Merry Christmas, friend.
Merry Christmas, Barb! What a wonderful, long rambly post -- I love those best of all. :)
I never get tired of seeing your beautiful fat Christmas tree -- so lovely!
I recognize the wrapping paper Mandy is wrapping that one present in -- there's a roll laying on my bed right now that I just finishing wrapping several presents in. Love those happy snowmen.
Your goodies look delicious, so good that I think I'd have trouble maintaining my willpower and saying no to them, especially the Santa's whiskers ones!
Krissy and her little family ARE beautiful!
I hope you all have the most blessed of Christmases!
I loved reading your Friday night meanderings.
Your little Cameron is just one of the cutest little guys ever! And I do know how Chelsea can just be a part of your heart. We have a precious pet like that too!
Merry Christmas to you and your wonderful family!
Ah yes, the tree is getting full of gifts! It's great your family is with you this weekend, including your mom! Safe travels to her next week. The family photo is great! Cameron is so cute he could be on tv! Glad to hear Chelsea is still being loved after the coffe incident, she probably needed a caffeine fix that day:) And I think seeing The Nativity with a buttery TUB and Sprite will be a great treat!
It took me awhile too, but I think I will be up for our family get together tomorrow too! Praise God!
A Blessed Christmas to you and yours! You have truly been enriching to me!
Betty

Merry merry Christmas, Barb! This was such a warm fuzzy post to read. Your daughter's family photo has got to be the poster child for beautiful family photos. And Cameron? Well, what more can be said about him. He's a gorgeous child!!
We saw the Nativity Story while we were in Branson last week and it's really good. You'll like it and I hope you get to go see it.
Merry Christmas, Aunt Barb:)
Merry Wonderful Christmas Barb, This was a beautiful post and I love you and your precious family. I feel like I know them.
The Nativity movie was absolutely awesome I saw it twice. I went with each of my children at separate times so it would be special for both. It is amazing I cant wait to buy it when it comes out so we can watch it together every single Christmas from now on. You will love it. Every christian home should OWN this movie.
Have a wonderful Christmas! Can't wait to see what all us bloggy buddies have in store this new year!!! Love you!!

I would like to take the Dave Ramsey course. I like him and I bet this was a good course. I hate sticking to a budget but I think it is worth it for financial peace.
What a beautiful Christmas card of your daughter and her family. I don't have a single one like this either. I don't think these were that big back in our day. I wish I had them now. I love getting these cards so I can see how everyone has grown over the years.
I want to see this movie too. I don't know when I will get to, but like you it's something I really want to see now, not wait 4 months for it on video. Plus the fact that is would be more special to see it around Christmas.
Have a very Merry Christmas and I will pray your mom's move goes smoothly and safely. I will be thinking of you all on Christmas day.
Ok, tears are running down my cheeks now, Yes I am pregnant:) But this was such a sweet post about your girls, grandchild, Mom and doggy:) You are one blessed woman!

Brilliant posts, Barb...I am just catching up with you all. I love the way your family are the centre of your universe. Just perfect. And it feels like I am perched in your kitchen having a chat and sampling your amazing goodies....
Of all the cookies you got showing on this blog, dollface, that daughter of yours is the smartest one of all. Dave Ramsey's plan makes tons of sense, and going to his class is a great idea! www.debtective.com
