Here they are! Aren't they pretty? I made a dozen quart jars with brownie mix in them and six each of two different drink mixes in pint jars. I have friends who love coffee drinks but don't care for cocoa and vice versa. Since I first mentioned these jars so many people have emailed me for more information I thought I'd just share with everyone this way.
The basic instructions in my little recipe books are to layer the ingredients in the order they're given in the recipe. When I was making the brownie mix jars I quickly realized all the layering would drive me nuts so I decided to mix all the dry ingredients and do the layering at the top of the jar with the pretty ingredients (coconut, chocolate chips and chopped pecans). So my brownie mix jars look like this. I think it's OK since the main thing is that they taste good and I don't think you can go wrong with these ingredients!

You'll need little cards to write the instructions for making the mixes. I found these cute little cards for fifty cents per pack of six at Michael's.

So I'm giving this as gifts to my family and friends - one jar of cocoa or cappuccino mix and one jar of brownie mix, the instruction cards and two of the Stanta star ornaments I made. I chose the gold and silver shiny stars because they match the fabrics I used on the lids.

Before I share the recipes, here are some basic instructions.
You must use wide mouth jars because you'll be putting your hand inside to press the ingredients down as you go.
It's not important with the pint size drink mixes but if you make the brownie mix in the quart jars, it's important to press the layers down as firmly as you can. Otherwise, the ingredients will not fit.
I honestly thought it was just fine to mix all the dry ingredients in the brownies and then just put the coconut, chocolate chips and pecans on top. It's all going to get mixed together in a big bowl anyway. But I'll give you the recipe the way it's written in my book and let you decide how you want to do it.
First the drink mixes:
Flavors: Amaretto, Hazelnut, Vanilla, Irish Creme
Ingredients for Jar
Mix the following 3 ingredients in a small bowl:
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons flavored powdered coffee creamer
1/2 cup dry milk
1/2 cup chocolate flavored drink mix (like Quik)
(flavored coffee creamer is available in several flavors including the ones listed above)
Place half the milk mixture into jar.
Place half the chocolate drink mix into the jar next.
Add the remaining milk mixture.
Add the remaining chocolate drink mix.
Decorate the jar.
Attach recipe below to jar. Name cocoa by the flavor you chose.
- Empty cocoa mix into a large mixing bowl.
- Blend very well with a whisk.
- Place mix back into jar or a container of your choice.
- Place 2 tablespoons mix into a cup. Add 1 cup boiling water and stir until completely dissolved.
- Top with whipped cream if desired.
Flavors: Amaretto, Hazelnut, Vanilla, Mocha Almond and Irish Creme
Ingredients for Jar
Mix the following 3 ingredients in a medium bowl:
1/3 cup dry milk
2/3 cup + 1 tablespoon sugar ( regular white sugar, not powdered)
2/3 cup flavored powdered coffee creamer
1/3 cup instant coffee
Place half the milk mixture into the jar first.
Place coffee into the jar next, spreading evenly.
Add remaining milk mixture.
Decorate jar.
Attach recipe below to jar. Name coffee by the flavor you chose.
- Empty coffee mix into a large mixing bowl.
- Blend very well with a whisk.
- Place mix back into jar or a container of your choice.
- Place 2 tablespoons mix into a cup. Add one cup of boiling water and stir until mixture is completely dissolved.
- Top with whipped cream if desired.
Now for the brownie mix recipe:
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup cocoa powder (not drink mix, I used Hershey's unsweetened cocoa powder)
3/4 cup more sugar
1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup flaked coconut
1 cup flour mixed with 1/2 teaspoon baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt
Layer ingredients in order given in a 1 quart wide mouth canning jar. Press each layer firmly in place. Clean inside of jar with a paper towel after adding cocoa powder. Press flour in to jar last - adding in two portions, pressing in very firmly.
Decorate jar and attach the following recipe:
- Empty jar of brownie mix in a large mixing bowl. Blend thoroughly.
- Add 2 sticks butter or margarine (melted), 4 eggs and 2 teaspoons vanilla.
- Mix until well blended
- Spread batter into a sprayed 9 X 13-inch pan.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.
- Cool. Cut into squares. Makes 24 to 30 brownies.
I just gave my friend Sheri her Christmas gift today and she was so pleased with it. My stars are already hanging on her tree and she's making the brownies when her family arrives next week. I tell you, giving her a gift I made felt nice.
And these are very, very economical. That works for me!

Very nice!! Your jars look so cute and of course I love the santa stars. Thanks for sharing and have a great evening:)
Those gifts look amazing - but I do love the Santa stars best. A home-ade gift is blessed with love and those who you choose to give to will feel especially loved! Hope Mandy's OK.
OK...commenting on two posts, since I'm catching up! :)
First of all, these jars are beautiful and anyone would be very lucky to get one of these for Christmas!
Secondly, so sorry about Mandy's pain. That kind of pain can be awful. So glad the oral surgeon is now on top of it.
As for blogger....UGH! I've never had as much trouble in these many months as I have in the last two days! I can't comment on more than half of my bloggy friend's posts and it's SO frustrating. I know it's because they are now beta...I know I need to switch, too...
And sorry to not answer your blogger questions, but that I have one for you instead...is it true that I might lose my whole blog and have to start over if I switch to beta? Tell me is isn't so....
Anyway, hope you have had a chance to relax after your last few days, Barb!
Have a great rest of the week!
Tammy, to answer your question, one person, Elizabeth Q., left a comment on the previous post saying she'd lost her whole blog. But she's the only person I've heard of that this has happened to.
Most people said the switch was really easy and fast. I'd switch if I could but blogger won't let me do it yet. It's very frustrating to not be able to comment on my friends' posts. I hope they understand that we're trying but can't.
These look so lovely!
Pretty! Pretty!
Yummy! Yummy!
Okay, Barb, I want some of whatever you take to give you all of your energy!!!! LOL Your jars are beautiful! And I'm going to have to try your recipes. Whoever is getting a jar is a lucky lucky person! :)

Ok I am hungry. Barb you did such a wonderful job, they all look so pretty. How is your daughter doing?
They look beautiful and yummy! I think even I could pull this one off. Of course, mine wouldn't have those adorable santa stars.
I'm starting to think that Martha Stewart might be sitting in her beautiful Connecticut farmhouse crying and wishing she could be more like Barb.
Just beautiful! I know I'd be thrilled if someone gave me something that cute and yummy for Christmas.
hey barb...sorry i haven't been by in a while! this is such a great gift idea. i've always wanted to do something like this. so thanks for the recipes and tips! :)
They are beautiful - you should be very proud of how they turned out! I love anything homemade, speaks love all over it. xooxox
I love all homemade gifts....they mean more to me....thanks for being OUR Homemade gift this year....YOU.
Big mama's comment was dead on!
I love those... I think I'll make them for all of my teacher/helper people on my list!
Blessings,
Karla
You know Barb, I feel as if we are FRIENDS. Really I do! And doesn't being your friend mean that we exchange gifts?!!..... : )
Heavens-to-Betsy, FRIEND, you are making me hungry! You are so clever and those Santa ornaments are the cutest things ever. And the mixes and the presentation are wonderful! Lucky friends!!!
Hi Precious Barb~
Thanks for all the great recipes! I am feeling better! Thanks for your precious emails!
As it has been a long few days, I think I am with you in going to bed early.
When you get a chance - come over to ATH and read the rest of the blessing story!
I am just curious - what about that CHEX mix that you make every December?
I think I might have to start that tradition. The week of Christmas - is just not enough of it! ;-)
Blessings!
In HIM,
Renee
Girl, you're putting us all to shame...my hubby having some surgery this weekend, I'll be tending to him, and hoping to catch up on bloggin, too
Beta is challenging me right now, can't comment...I'll be posting Christmas tour of my 1870 farmhouse on Thursday or Friday..
love to you
Amazing! Those look so good and you have some lucky friends.
I'm gonna have to try some of those recipes out! Thanks for sharing them.
Heck I'm going to make up a batch of the flavored cocoa mix for myself! :) The jars look great and I'm sure the lucky recipients will really appreciate them!
I am SO impressed. Everything you made looks like it's right out of a specialty store! You could make a lot of money selling these on-line. (if you do, just don't go commenting on all our blogs with your web site on where everyone could buy your stuff or make money, Ok?):)
Barb, you're so sweet to answer my question like that here on your blog! Thanks...that eases my mind and may have to take the plunge here in the next week...
And I had to laugh at Big Mama's comment...because it's so true! I have to agree with her about Martha...and I think not only is she pining to be more like you, but is most likely taking notes! :)
You are my hero!!!! They do look beautiful...thanks for the recipes!
Laura
Thanks for sharing these wonderful economical gifts. I have a couple of jars left and I will definitely be filling them with the Brownie mixes!
They look so pretty! I have received a couple of these in the past and just love them, but have never made them.
I'm so frustrated with Beta - I have so many people I can't comment on, and no way to tell them that I'm trying! IF that's what they're like, I want nothing to do with changing.
I am so sorry about Mandy's dry socket - that was my biggest fear when I had 8 taken out at age 33 before braces. I'd been warned, and now I know how painful it can be from reading about Mandy. Poor thing!
I loved the Calgon post. I guess I haven't gotten around too much the last few days! Check out the WW from yesterday -
LOve these Barb, and they're going to be a great idea for some homemade items to send to my family back home :)
Thanks for much for sharing.
Sandra
Fabulous! Tomorrow we start all our Christmas baking in the camp kitchen. It is very large and it will be so much fun with a lot of women scrambling around. These are so cute!
Hugs!
Oh Barb, these really are a fabulous idea and not only are they a tasty treat, they look so pretty too in those jars!! I think the ones who will be receiving these jars and santa stars will be thrilled:-) Going to print out the recipes now!! Hugs xox
These are awesmoe! Beautiful
Those turned out beautiful, Barb. Thanks for posting the recipes. I'm going to make some of the cocoa mixes.
Gorgeous! I made cocoa mix this year as well, but I like your recipe - powdered sugar? Yumm-O!!!
I also need to start earlier this year with the 'collecting of the jars'.
Ooh, the jars look gorgeous and thank you so much for sharing all of your recipes with us Barb!
Merry Christmas to you!
