First of all, forgive all my griping about Mr. Blogger yesterday. I really do appreciate that it's free. I just wish it worked the way it should. I'm really hesitant to switch to beta blogger because the old blogger has so many problems, I'm afraid of what the new one has.
On to other news. I was sitting in the living room talking on the phone with Brenda yesterday afternoon when Rob walked in. The first thing I noticed was the turkey he was carrying. The company he's working for gave the employees Thanksgiving turkeys which is, of course, nice. Butterball turkeys, which is even nicer. Then I realized what he was carrying actually looked like a very healthy (except it's dead of course) chicken. So this eagerly anticipated Thanksgiving turkey weighs eleven pounds. I'm truly not ungrateful. Actually, I appreciate the gesture. But today I have to go buy a real turkey for Thanksgiving.
I think what I'll plan to do with the little one is add it to my Christmas dinner. I always bake a big ham. But this turkey will fit in the oven at the same time and we'll just have both.
The next thing I noticed, keeping in mind that I'm on the phone with Brenda and a little distracted, is that he was carrying the turkey in his left hand which is odd. He's right handed. Then....I noticed a hospital bracelet on the wrist of the arm that's carrying the little turkey. Then....I noticed his other arm in a sling. Then....I told Brenda I had to go. I briefly told her what I was seeing, she promised to say a prayer and off the phone I got.
Rob was standing on the back of a delivery truck yesterday. The guy he was working with had just thrown the door open and it came back down and hit Rob on the top of his head which knocked him off his feet. He fell, hard, onto his right arm and shoulder. Nothing is broken, but after an afternoon in the hospital and all kinds of xrays and tests, they determined he has a deep tissue bruise from his shoulder to his elbow. He has another doctor's appointment on Monday but at this point they think he's off work (without pay) for at least a full week. Sigh.....
So let's see where I can find a blessing in this. First, his arm's not broken. And his shoulder isn't seriously injured which is a huge blessing since that shoulder was broken in an almost fatal encounter he and his car had with a semi when he was nineteen. The shoulder has always given him trouble. And the big scab on top of his poor but thankfully not seriously injured head should fall off in a few days. Sigh...
Second, the little baby turkey he brought home is very cute and looks sweet in my freezer.
Third, he'll be home next week to relax and enjoy watching me doing all the things I do to get ready for Thanksgiving. I don't think he's ever actually been around during Thanksgiving week, during the day anyway, to see what really has to happen to produce the feast. I can easily see myself smearing a little flour on my cheek when he's not looking and getting all kinds of sympathy from him. That's a blessing, right?
Fourth, surely since it's a workers comp thing, we won't lose an entire week's income.
Fifth, we don't have health insurance since he lost his real job so it is a huge, huge blessing that the medical expenses are covered by workers comp.
So. Today I get to see Mandy and Aaron. They'll be down at Krissy and Andy's house babysitting Cameron so mommy and daddy can go Santa shopping. I plan to run down there. We don't see those two very often lately.
Then I'm off to buy a real, hopefully fresh-not-frozen turkey!

My first thought is...I must have missed some vital posts awhile back, because I totally missed out on Rob getting his new job! I guess a very belated congratulations are in order!!! (Sorry, I'm so behind!)
Secondly, I'm SO sorry about his fall! Yikes! I'm just glad nothing was broken!
And yes...I really think you should dust yourself with extra flour during the Thanksgiving preparations, Barb! It certainly wouldn't hurt! LOL
Oh, and not to shamelessly plug my post or my mom's, but in case you haven't checked out my latest post of my mom's trip, you'll have to see the picture at the end...then go read hers, because with Rob's fall, you will appreciate reading her story!
Have a great weekend, Barb!
Praise the Lord Rob wasn't hurt more seriously! Surely he'll get some compensation for being off work after being hurt on the job.
I'll be cooking tonight for our Thanksgiving Dinner tomorrow at church. Noon dinner, that is. I still don't know for sure what I'm cooking besides candied sweet potatoes, but I'll post it on my Sunday Dinner entry.
Hope you have a good day visiting with the kids and Cameron. It's a beautiful sunny 47 degrees here.
Barb, I just love the thoughtful way you are looking at that little want-to-be turkey! lol It would be perfect for a couple but when you have a big family like you all do, well. hehe! My hubby's company does something that I think works for everybody. They give us a $12.00 voucher to apply to any Butterball turkey we want.
Have fun visiting the kids and that cute little Cameron!
So glad your hubby wasn't hurt too bad, but still, what a safety hazard! Grateful, for all the reasons you mentioned. :)
So sorry! Here's another good thing - if he has to miss a week of work, at least it's a holiday week, which he wouldn't work every day anyway. I'm already getting all excited because my husband will have an extra two days at home next week.
Hi Barb. So many things to be thankful for...Rob isn't in the hospital! You have something to eat. I know it's easy for me to sit here and say that because I didn't go through what you just did. My husband's company stopped giving out turkeys altogether and he's been there 31 years.
Hope you have a wonderful afternoon and a blessed Sunday.
We get a 12 pound turkey every year, so it goes in the freezer for later. Our stores have 16 and under turkeys for $5 and over 16 for $6, so that's nice.
So sorry about the injury! But you're right - we're learning lessons from Nancy on looking for blessings in everything, aren't we?
I'm envious you were talking to Brenda!
Amazing! In the midst of what could've been a serious turn of events, you have found blessings to count and a positive outlook.
I hear that the little turkeys are very tender!
So glad to hear Rob will be hanging out with you next week (that's a good thing, right?).
Have fun in your preparations and be thankful for His blessings!
I'm so glad Rob wasnt hurt more than he was. Enjoy the time together!
Those small turkeys are wonderful for deep frying, btw.
Wow... praising God he wasn't hurt more!!
Bless you for looking for the good in the midst of the not so good!
I'm glad that Rob was not too badly injured. It's amazing to me that you even thought of looking for the blessings in this situation, but I'm glad you did. Reminds all of us that there is good in every situation. Hope you find your turkey and hope the hits are done (at least for now, life is full of them and as long as we survive them or don't come out too battered, I guess we are ahead of the game).
I'm glad that your husband wasn't more seriously hurt. Since it's a worker's comp accident, he really shouldn't lose any pay. I love how you were looking on the bright side. Have fun shopping for a "real" turkey. :o)
I switch to Beta blogger a last week. It is much faster but I notice that some of the people that left comments on my blog came out as anonomous after the switch?
That's definitely a positive spin on things. I'm so sorry he got hurt, but very happy it wasn't worse.
Save that little turkey for a candlelight dinner for the two of you sometime. He'll think you're more marvelous than he probably already does!
We've actually done the small birds on our BBQ grill. (wrapped in h.d foil.)
Very tasty! So glad Rob's injuries were not serious!
Enjoy your visit with your daughters..
:)
Oh, Barb, my friend, Praise God Rob was not hurt more seriously. My goodness. Praying he'll be back to usual right quickly.
So glad he wasn't hurt any more than he was.
I don't have a blogger account but have problems commenting on blogs, and they do seem to come out anonymous on some as Lori said.
And you have a turkey for your Christmas meal!
Oh ouch for Rob! I'm sure he'll get to feeling better soon.
Remember I sold Insrance for 11 years...so yes...this is workers comp related and will ALL be paid for completely....and yes he should get paid....the only blessing in this is he will be home this week for the holidays......it may be nice....hanging out together....think of all your thankful for.....its Thanksgiving of course!
mmmmmmm I can almost taste it!!!!
Cannot wait for "the big meal " of the year....my favorite food combinations.
Traveling to Indiana to see my Mom and Dad before they leave for Florida.
