When GiBee at Kisses of Sunshine announced a couple of weeks ago that she'd be hosting a homemade gift idea exchange called Homemade With Love, I knew I'd be participating. Homemade gifts have been a big part of our Christmases for almost thirty years. I've always loved making gifts for Christmas. This year it's a good thing I love to do this because our Christmas budget will be smaller than it's been in a long time. Still, I've always believed you can't put a price on gifts made with love. Here are a few things I'm making this year as well as a few I've made every year since Rob and I married each other almost twenty-eight years ago. If you click on the images, you'll be able to see the detail in the ornaments I've made.
CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS
Of all the things I've made over the years, this is the one my family would miss the most. I've made so many of these felt Christmas stockings from kits, I lost count ages ago. Of course we all four had a stocking - Daddy, Mommy, Krissy, Mandy. But I made Andy (Krissy's husband) and Aaron (Mandy's fiance) stockings the first Christmas we shared with them. Of course Cameron got his last year, his first Christmas. I've made them for all my nieces and nephews and even for family friends. This is a photo of two I made this past winter, after Christmas. These are for my next two granchildren, as yet not even conceived. All these stockings need are the names applied and the backs sewn on. That's me. Always prepared!
CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENTS
The very first year Rob and I were married, I made my first ornament. It was a wooden clothespin reindeer. I gave them to everyone in both our families. They still have them. It became an annual event. Every year I make a new ornament. This year I chose Santa Stars. I started these at the beginning of the year.
I'll not only make these for our immediate family, I'll also give them as gifts. I always find pretty tins and boxes to give them in.
So far I've made about fifty of them. (Yes, hours and hours of work but I really enjoy it.) I'll be making a lot more. One of my annual gifts to my daughters is that I make enough of that year's ornaments that they can give them to their friends and their coworkers. They always give me the credit for the ornament. Their friends know their mom made the ornament.
Did mention I love to make ornaments? I'm also making these this year. These are cinnamon stick Santas. I'm only making these for myself and my daughters. These cinnamon sticks are hard to find!
I'm also making these sweet snowmen and again, only for the girls and myself.
As you can see, I've only just begun the ornament making frenzy. I'm ready to get started on lots more Santa stars. Throughout the year I kept my eyes open for perfect fabric to fit the many different tastes of my friends. Some are like me - I really like the silver and gold lame stars. Others would like the more traditional Christmas prints. And still others will love having these stars made in country prints. I'll probably make fifty or sixty more of these between now and Christmas.Another thing I make every year is food gifts. Right after Thanksgiving I start making Chex party mix from the original recipe. I give each of the kids a container full to take home and they know they can bring it back for refills all through the holidays. My family wouldn't know what was going on if I didn't have this sitting out all through the holidays.
You know how people bring goody trays in to work during the Christmas season? About twenty years ago my boss brought in a tray and his wife had put some of her 30-day friendship cake on it. I immediately begged her for the recipe. It involves a "starter" and seriously takes thirty days to make. This is so special, I plan to do a separate post soon about that cake and I'll include the recipe. This friendship cake is a wonderful gift to give.
I also give gifts of southern divinity which is almost a lost art any more. And with every food gift I give, I include the recipe written on a nice recipe card.
I ordered these two little books last winter. I plan to make some of these "gifts in a jar" this year. Everyone loves brownies and special winter drink mixes. So I thought these would be very sweet gifts to give.Honestly, any gift you make for someone is a very special gift. Gifts that involved the giver's time and thought and of course LOVE are the nicest gifts of all.
And because I really believe in giving credit where it's due, my sister Bev sent me a wonderful little Christmas box last year. In it were two Santa stars, a cinnamon stick Santa and a sweet fat snowman, all for my tree. Within minutes I'd emailed her and asked for the patterns. She went one step beyond that and sent me the craft books that included the patterns for my birthday this year. The stick arms on my snowmen are made from sticks from Bev's back yard. She sent me a package of sticks from her back yard in Pennsylvania! Everyone should be as blessed as I am to have a sister like Bev.
NOTE: The very first comment I received on this post, from Kathleen Marie, made me realize I should have said this in the first place. I'd be more than happy to share my ornament patterns if any of you would like to have them. Just email me with your name and address - my email link is in my profile. And by the way, the new profile photo showing up when I leave comments is none other than the infamous Chelsea herself! I'm working on a little more realistic photo of her. She's not nearly so fancy smancy looking these days. :-)

Wow, what fabulous crafty gifts. How wonderful! Do you share directions/patterns? That Santa star is so super cute as is the snowman.
I have always made my family's stockings and when I make new ones the kids hang the old ones in their bedrooms!
I just LOVE Christmas! The most wonderful time of the year!
Thank you for commenting on my post at OW. I wasn't sure what to blog about but the Lord gave me the idea about 4 a.m. He loves to do that sometimes :)
Have a fabulous rest of the week!
Yes ma'am! I'm a huge believer in sharing the love. So I'm going to go right back into my post and put a note in there telling people I'd be happy to share my patterns.
Thank you for mentioning it, Kathleen Marie. I should have thought of it. After all, I wouldn't have been able to make these had Bev not sent me the patterns AND the sticks. :-)
WOW! The memories you've brought back for me!! I STILL have the stocking I hung up on my parents foreplace. But it's at my Mother's home. I am a huge fan of making a gift. It's funny. I once took a girl out on a $300 date and never got so much as a Thank You. But when I bought a used VHS tape for another friend, she was so awed by it as if I just gave her an engagement ring! A great post!!
Oh wow Barb, you are so talented and I'm Just in love with all the goodies you make. I'm with Kathleen, I would LOVE LOVE to have patterns and directions for them. This is the first year that my kids and I are going to make our own ornaments, I'm ecstatic :)
I'm also making Stockings this year, so I'm really looking forward to it all :) I'll email you right now :)
Have a wonderful day,
Sandra
Oh, the stockings! My grandmother had ones at her house for we three granddaughters. They looked just like that one. Actually we had one with a snowman and two with a tree and carolers, I think? Great memories. What a lot of work you did on the ornaments as well.
Such fabulously great and fun ideas. Thanks for sharing!
I love your ideas. The things you've made shown in the pictures are really, really cute!
Barb,
These are cute beyond words! I know anyone would be delighted to receive your handmade gifts!
Girl I want to know where you find all the time between reading all those books, blogging, AND doing the most beautiful ornaments around!!!
These are great! Love the details! Makes me wonder what I have in storage. And also makes me wonder if you also have elves hiding somewhere helping you...
Great pics!
You are one crafty gal. Those look so nice and I'm with you I like the shiny material for the stars! How special. My kids, since they were born got one ornament each every year, but not homemade, 'cause you see I break out in hives from sewing! Yup!
Wonderful ornaments, Barb! I really like your santa stars - very cute. I've been trying to make cross-stitch stockings for our family, but seem to only get about one a year done. Don't know how you do it all Wonder Woman!
You do great work, Barb. And I use cinnamon sticks for crafts and cooking, but I don't have much trouble finding them....it's the prices that are the problem here! They're proud of them!
I make several jar mixes for brownies, cookies, bean soup, seasoned rice, etc. for gifts and to use myself. I pretty up the ones I give as gifts, but the ones I make for myself I just put individual portions in ziptop freezer bags.
I make cookies and candy for Christmas, among other things, to give as gifts. I think they're more personal and meaningful than a tie or sweater that someone may or may not like.
I can barely even think about food right now. Lamar, Cecil, Sue and Jessica and I went to Tamale's, one of my favorite Mexican restaurants and I committed gluttony, I confess. It was great!
BTW, my nephew Danny brought me 5 grey and fox squirrels this morning after he went hunting, and I cleaned them to cook soon. I fry mine, though, and make gravy and biscuits to go with them. I don't really think I'd care for any squirrel and liver in the crockpot, thanks anyway. ;-)
Barb, this post has confirmed it - you dont sleep! Blogging, reading, spotless house and perfect ornaments - you really do do it all. So you must not sleep. I have so many beautiful things youve sent me - just this morning I refound my Martha Stewart poncho you made me last Christmas and my crocheted socks are sitting in my pj drawer ready to pull out soon. So - do you need more sticks? Let me know, I'll be happy to mail you some, really. We have to throw them over the fence every time we mow, so they are available for the picking, literally.
Susanne, the cinnamon santas would be perfect for you - no sewing, just a glue gun and a dab of paint.
Beautiful stuff - beautiful post. xoxoxo
I'm with you. I'd rather have something someone made any day. I usually make things too, but the time has really gotten away from me this year. I'll have to give this some thought. One year I learned tatting and made enough ornaments to fill several Christmas trees!! I don't have a digital camera so can't really post a picture of them. Have you ever tried tatting? It makes such pretty lacey things.
You have a real gift. All of the things you've made are just wonderful. What special gifts.
Oh my goodness, I want to spend Christmas at your house. I am in love with those Santa Stars, they are too cute.
Thank you for even more wonderful ideas. Every blog I click on today was such wonderful things. You are very talented! I love the stockings and I'm going to have to try that one this year. Where do you get your kits? A fabric or craft store? Thanks again.
How wonderful that you have all these fabulous traditions! I loved the ornaments! They are sooo very precious! We too have the Chex party mix tradition - but not for the whole month - with refills - Wow!
How do you do it all? Bev must be right - you really don't sleep, do you?
Blessings!
Well actually, Ladies, I'm usually in bed by 9 o'clock every night. But you forget - my children are grown and I'm "retired." Makes a huge difference. Also, I work on Christmas crafts year round.
Hobby Lobby and Michaels both normally carry the felt stocking kits but they sell out so fast, you have to wonder why they don't stock more in the first place. So I've begun ordering them from Herschner's. It too three months to get them but they did finally arrive. I ordered extras and made a couple up for my future grandbabies.
And right about now is when I start watching for Chex coupons. Can you believe cereal is $4 a box now? I'm sure I go through about 18 boxes of corn, rice and bran Chex every holiday season.
OK, Sandra and Kelli, your patterns are ready to go out in tomorrow's mail. Anyone else? Just send me your mailing address.
If you happen to check back in Bev, I still have some sticks. I'll let you know when I need some more. My poor littly one tree in the back yard can't afford to donate any. And all my bushes have stickers!
You are a crafty person. Thanks for sharing your ideas. What great Christmas traditions you have! You have been a blessing to me.
Man, after reading you and Kathleen today, I'm starting to feel like a real slug!! Ijust dono't have the patience, eyes, or hands to do such any more, though I used to love it. So sad!
You're right -- you need to read Bodie Thoene's books.
And you're right, too, about the sickness of so many children. Satan is having a good time. But prayer warriors are at work! What a blessing this has been to be able to share each other's burdens.
I love all of them!! I'm not sure which one is my favorite! I'm so jealous - I wish I could do stuff like that - but even with following directions I'm all fingers and thumbs when it comes to that type of craft stuff! I love the ornaments though - so cute looking!!
The closest I've come to making gifts are the "gifts in a jar" and even that I've only done twice! I did the brownies a few years ago and last year I made up a whole bunch of a spiced tea mix that smelled wonderful and everyone really enjoyed!
I love those Santa stars! How cute! I've got some Christmas fabric left over from dresses I made for my girls and two of my nieces several years ago - oh my goodness, ages - they haven't worn dresses since elementary school. I still haven't pulled out my sewing machine to get started on making gifts. I'd better hurry!
I made a felt stocking for my daughter. I have 2 kits for mine and my husband's stockings. I scotch guarded her stocking to protect it. This was one of my fav. projects.
You are very talented!! I love the "be warm" ornaments.
Hi Barb,
Andrea said I would like you blog. She wasn't kidding. Wow! I especially like the snowmen. Too Cute!
I'm not anonymous anymore. I started a new blog today. Yea! Andrea was a big help but I can proudly say I did most of it myself. It needs work but is a good start. Come check it out. the name is:

Oh, I love your ornaments! The Santa Stars are my favorite, but I detest sewing...especially small items. I would love to copy :) the cinnamon stick Santas. What do you use for the beard?
I too make A LOT of Chex Mix starting in November. My husband and son love it and I gift it and take to gatherings.
Thank you for sharing your ideas!

Are there good recipes in those jar books? I think that would be a good thing for me to make for Christmas presents since our budget is tight, too. Where did you get the books?
Wow! I am so impressed not only by all you have done but that you make ornaments for your daughters to give away as well. My mom would never do that. You are one special lady. Laura
Great ideas and beautiful workmanship! And the Santa Stars are seriously cute - thanks so much for offering to share info on them.
youre so creative and clever
I love all the ornamants but really love the cinnamon Santa's and am going to try to make them. I like the Santa stars and the way you pack them as little sets but don't think I could make those. I am not to good at sewing.
You got me all fired up about crafting, but all my supplies are back in Texas. Unfortunately I've yet to locate my extra money for new ones. Maybe I can pick up pop bottles and cash them in. Those were the days. Gone just like S&H green stamps. Ah well, maybe on the next check. I really want to try some of these out.
